Co. Down Rockfest

#1 Post by Der Baron »

People:Me, Fishyfingers

Duration:11:00-19:00

Tide:Rise, Flood, and ebb

Weather: Immaculate

Bait: Lug, Mac, sidewinder, fly, spinners, and Mac trace

Rigs: Float, flapper, and trace

Results: Pollack, Wrasse, Coalies, Mackerel.

Report: Had been watching the tides carefully in the hope of getting an evening fishing into darkness, but it wasn't going to happen this week. So off we went to our favourite rock mark of the minute. Started off a bit slow, although there was obviously fish about, they were being pernicity on the float rigs. I put a bait rod out with a flapper, and this was to be the rod that picked the first fish up just a bit further out, as the tide began to push, I brought a nice we pollack to the shore of about a 1 1/2lb. Kev then had a few nice Wrasse, Coalies and Pollack to the float, within about half an hour. After loosing a few more rigs on rough ground, I lifted the fly road, and stuck a new tying on I had thrown together the night before, and quickly brought a nice little Pollack to the rocks. Very pleased with myself I was! :o
Kev then decided to give the sidewinder a throw, and within a few minutes he got his reward, on his little 6ft Ugli-stik travel rod, all hell suddenly broke loose, and I was soon handlining a easy 4lb Pollack up from below for him. What a fight, good to see on light tackle. So it was to be for the afternoon, Kev getting good hits and good fish to the bluey sidewinder. I stuck with the float, determined to get a good Wrasse out of this session, and was to be rewarded with a nice Ballan of about 2 1/2 to 3lb. Job done there then.
:idea: At full tide, I decided to lift the Penn powerstix beach rod, and stuck a Macky trace on, hopin I'd pick up a few Irish Tuna :twisted: Bloody hell! what a great decision. With a 3oz lead on the end and my little Abu Blue Yonder, I was hoiking it out an easy 80yds, and straight into the Macs, the biggest was about a 1 1/2lb, huge lookin fish, a sublime five minutes of macky madness. A nice way to end the day, for we needed to get home and get the aftersun on our burnt nappers!!!

I fish that location on and off too! And like yourself get pollock, coalies, wrasse and mackerel. But thats it! Was told there were codling about too but I just can't get them - have you ever had one there? If so, far out or close in? any other species?

Incidently, I met a guy there last week there who suggested raw king prawn as bait for when rag unavailable. I took him at his word and tried some - definitely produced a larger stamp of fish on average, be it pollock, wrasse or coalie. Also got me a humungus mackerel on the float that weighed over 1.5lb! Yummy it was too! So if he's reading this - cheers mate!

What I love about there is that unlike other spots like Grey Fort, donaghadee etc. anglers have respect for their surroundings and I have yet to need to pick up angling related litter. Although it does piss me off when dog walkers bag the poo then leave the bags sitting at the side of the path. Bring it back to the bin ffs or leave it to decompose naturally - something it can't do in a Tesco bag :(

Ta Chaps!

P Loughers;
Yes I've had Codling and even Ling from here, as it's a fairly deep water mark!

Well done again guys, what more could you want from a fishing trip? Brilliant weather & plenty of fish being caught to keep you busy. Excellent stuff.
