Beach and rock sessions
Friday night 10pm – 1am
Went for a bass session on Friday night in the surf. However there was little or no surf on the venue when I arrived and lots of weed sitting about in the water which was clearly visible in the bright moonlight so wasn’t looking too good. After an hour with just 1 flounder to show I was thinking of heading home but a few dogs and flounder started to show up at distance which kept things going. Picked up a schoolie and missed one other good bite in close. Was just starting to pack up when another good bite resulted in a double bass. Pretty good night given the conditions with all the bass taken on crab.
Saturday 6 – 11pm
Hit the rocks Saturday evening for an exploratory session, a bit of a hike but had high hopes for a good bit of variety. Started off on a nice platform with access to about 80 ft of water. Picked up some mackerel and launce for bait and settled down for some Pollack fishing. Plenty of fish around in the 4-6 lb range with jelly worms working much better than sandeel which I couldn’t get a touch on. Switched to wrasse for a while and while the numbers weren’t great there were some good quality of fish with ballans up to 4.5 lb and a few corkwings.
At one point as I was bringing in a fish it was followed up by a few trigger fish. There was a shoal clearly visible directly below me and after baiting up and dropping in to the middle of them I had a few takes which ended with stripped baits but the fish disappeared and I didnt see them again for the evening.
Tried some bottom fishing at distance with various baits but the ground was very rough and after a few more wrasse including a cuckoo I moved a few hundreds yards to another platform. This proved a good move as first cast resulted in a cod of about 4 lb, followed immediately by a cod wrasse double. A few more cod showed as well as a dog, a monster poor cod, pouting and some wrasse. A conger bait dropped down the side was getting lots of interest but I couldn’t connect with any of the bites.
Topped up the bait supply with a few more mackerel which were rapidly being replaced by coleys and scad as the light faded.
As dusk descended, so did the midges and it was tough going for an hour. A few cracking bites as darkness fell on lug/crab baits resulted in straightened hooks but then the pouting took over with fish hitting the baits as soon as they touched bottom, some good fish but definitely not what I was after. Eventually connected with a few congers up to about 8 lb before starting the long haul back up to the car. Great session with 13 species in total over 30 cm and definitely a venue I’ll be returning to. Species - Cod, coley, Pollack, Pout, Poor cod, mackerel, scad, launce, ballan corkwing and cuckoo wrasse dog and conger
Sunday 1-3 am
After the rock session, tried a quick session after a few huss and ray. The huss were on the feed straight away with good numbers of fish of about 5 lb to start with. The size dropped significantly after a while though and after a few fish of no more than 1.5 lb I called it a night.
Sunday 1-3pm
Another quick session after a few turbot on Sunday. Lots of small fish to 25 cm to start before I connected with a nice double of a bass of about 5lb and a good turbot. Another decent Turbot followed but that was pretty much it as the weed took over completely approaching LW.
