Yes! I use one all the time great bit of kit especialy if you use braid, saves the auld finger from being sliced.

Are they difficult to fit to the rod, and are they easy enough to use?

I am considering getting one for the exact reason that you mention lol

They can be a little fiddly to put on the rod, I put mine on with a cable tie and covered it with insulation tape and leave it on the rod.
They take a bit of getting used to, I find I tend to cast a little to the right when using the cannon so a little adjustment is necessary.

I'm surprised by that. I fitted them onto two rods but never got them to work right for me, line kept slipping off the post before launch point in the cast. Is there some trick to them?

No! the only thing I can think of the line is not sitting on the cannon properly, or you have premature release with your finger. I have used them in most situations including casting tournaments with aggressive casting style and never had one come off.
