north antrim coast ray bash

#1 Post by rab 525 »

myself and the ghost

Date :wed 18/8/10

Duration: 21.45-- 2.30

Tide:drop

Weather:flat calm &dry

Bait: cocktail

Rigs: pulleys

Results: 11 cuckoo rays to 4lb 3 oz , 6 dogs , and a 4lb 9 oz bull huss.

Report:had heard of a few cuckoos starting to show and being caught lately by al and q ball , so we had planned a wee trip at the wkend until  , i was in work on wed on a 12hr shift till 19.30 when the ghost text me saying the conditions were spot on for cuckoos tonite and did i fancy it after work, so after a call to the wife to make sure we had no prior engagements on, the plan and venue was sorted .
the problem catching cuckoos is getting past the hoards of dogs getting to your bait before the rays get a chance , so we had been trying various baits on previous trips to the gal to find a cocktail that isnt overly attractive to dogs and will stay in the water longer to give the rays a chance to find it first before the dogs , the usual cuckoo trip is made up of a ratio of 2 cuckoos to 35 dogs , but on this trip we had a few dogs but only 50% compared to the rays :D so there must be something in our bait cocktail reasoning.
went futher on up the coast than we usually would when lookin rays and it paid of with both of us getting a ray first cast.

a few dogs came on the feed in between a few more cuckoos,

the ghost then had a nice huss that we both thought was a dog and he was getting a bit of abuse from myself until he spotted the nasal flaps and then my ears were ringing listening to his bumming and blowing
Image

the spot we were fishing was infested with rats that kept trying to steal our bait every 2 minutes and the ghost is terified of rats so he moved over to another spot to fish and left me on my todd with the bowler hats  so ghost has a few more pics of his fone of rays he got while on his todd and will prob add later
even with my sore feet i was glad i had went after work as it turned into a great session.

rab
if it cant get its jaws round a 1/0 its not worth catching [ mullet excluded ]

i know most of these ray are caught at dark, have any at all been taken in daylight???
didnt think it would have effected the ray the same as dogs.
Not the BigPhil from Irish Angler mag, I'm the original, i swear!!!!

dont think it rally matters if its dark. me and rab have had afew cuckoos in daylight. gettin weather conditions and tides togeather is the key! the problem with fishing at night is all the rats, hate them
