Ventry:

Twas a flat calm overcast beach that greeted us on day one, perfect doggie conditions ye would have thought for a beach reknowned for its doggie fishing.
Not to be Im afraid, three hours in and I was sitting pretty with 3 dogs and a flounder closely followed by Neil, JP, Kstaff and Donal with two dogs, Don with a Huss and a few other bits and pieces including Jd with a flattie and a rogue Bass!
The fishing had been slow but seemed to have almost died at this stage so I cast out a monstrosity of a rig I'd tied up the night before travelling down, designed to fish 2 hooks on the bottom for dogs etc and one up high for garfish. Was in the beach buddy, attentatively nurturing my hangover when I heard Petekd shout that he'd seen a garfish out in front. I wobbled down to my rod and sure enough I saw another one hopping around where I had cast! Reeled in a delightful double of a dog on the bottom snood and a gar on the top.
This invigorated a bit of life into the proceedings with all sorts of make shift gar rigs flying out into the drink. I had'nt even measured my gar before Rampent Wretchfish was up with the filleting knife " Giz the belly off that boy!" We were struggling to pick them up until Wretch pulled out his double bubble and proceeded to land 7 of the lengthy beasts! This was enough to win the day and showed how lethal this rig can be. Towards the end David landed the only ray of the day, his first ever and a beauty of around 10lbs. Fair play Dave.

That night much merriment ensued. Al tried to swallow a few lads while Neil posed for photos beside some of the locals.

Following morning we all (except kstaff) arrived fresh faced and fancy free on the beautiful Inch Strand. The sun was high in the sky and there was not a sniff of a surf to be seen. Didnt look too promising to say the least. By the off everybody (except me!) was ready with 3 hook flappers to lob into the suds. I chose to launch a doggy trace to the horizon! After 20 minutes or so most people had reeled in with a fine spattering of little flats and a couple of counters appearing. I had made the wrong decision! The day turned into a bit of a social event with lads wondering around chatting and slagging even though there were a few fish to be had. Great craic I must say. In the final hour Keith was just about keeping Kevin at bay until he managed a flurry of counters to put a bit of distance between them and deservadly take his first SAI win. Well done boy, first of many to come. I heard tell of Petekd making a flurry of flats in the last 40 minutes, but unfortunately it was to be too little too late.

Was my first comp back with SAI in a long time and must say, even though the fishing was'nt quite what it could have been for down there, it was a brilliant weekend. Craic was good, banter was better and a bit of fishing thrown in, in beautiful surroundings.

Thanks to everyone that made the effort.

Nice report Sean

Had a great weekend myself the craic was something else, even if I did come last on Inch Sunday
But at least the hangover, sunburn and 4 1/2 hour drive home made up for it

Bring on Gurteen I say

And congrats to Keith for his first win and to J...J...P..Sean for coming second on Ventry

Dear god, is nowhere sacred... She's everywhere.... :x

Cracking couple of days. Made a nice mess of things myself by deciding not to start fishing till about 40 mins to go in comp No. 2. Well done JP and Keith. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Brought the kids and the missus and camped on a site in Ballydavid, highly recommend, all had a ball.
Fluff chucking is the new black..... Rampant Wreckfish is a fly angler in denial :D
