North Wexford 31/07/10

#1 Post by alby »

People:Funtan, De Cochroche

Duration:8 pm - 4am

Tide:up & over high water

Weather:lovely calm evening

Bait:crab, lug & rag

Rigs:pulley pennels

Results:smooties, codling, tope, dogs

Report:Went to a beach where we heard there was hounds caught during the week. We weren't disappointed! On arrival we could see another angler returning a 5lb smoothie so confidence was high.

1st Cast Fintan had a gentle bite followed by a steaming run which produced the first smoothie of the night @ 5lb 9oz. I was next in on the action with a slackliner and another fish around the same size.

There was certainly a pack moving through as straight away both myself & Fintan fine runs and we both landed fish in the 5lb region at exactly the same time. Fishing died off then from about 11pm for 4 hours!! We had the occasional dog & codling during this time but no hounds so the packs had moved off somewhere else.

About 2:30 we were beginning to pack up, and we all decided to have one last cast, I was tidying away one rod when I heard the line screming on my other reel, looked around to see my good rod, just about to leave the tripoed & go water skiing so grabbed and struck followed by a brilliant scrap with the best firsh of the night @ 6lb 11 :)

Next cast I'd a run straight away, which funnily enough was the best fishter of all, I was shouting to the lads that this was my specimen, he tore line off the reel several times during the fight & stayed deep all the way in, amazingly it was only 5lb 10, but a right little scrapper. P Diddy got a run straight away and landed a fish in the 5lb class, but didn't pose for a photo because his other rod was singing, (he should have, it was only an energetic dog).

I think I'd another hound after that, but then got a bit frustrated as having 4 casts in a row had me buried by fish in a snag that seemed to appear on the ebb tide.

Great nights shore sport & hope to get out to enjoy it again soon!

(Post Script: Just sent a txt to Gordie to see how he got on last night - "8 glasses of full bodied red wine, biggest half a pint" )
