not what i expected 30/7/10

#1 Post by plumster »

People:myself

Duration:10pm-3am

Tide:2:30ish

Weather:balmy

Bait:rag/lug/peeler

Rigs:usual

Results:1 bass

Report:
decided i'd try for the hounds again as theres no point in bass fishing at the moment in these calm conditions, so headed back to the same mark myself and eeler had them about a month ago. it would be around midnight before i could fish this spot so i tried another one close by while waiting on the tide to push in :|
baits were only lasting about 2 minutes before the crabs had
cleaned the hooks, this was how it continued for the next 2 hours.loads of fish there as i could hear them splashing and jumping but the crabs did'nt give them a chance  probably mostly mullet anyway so moved around to the hound mark as the tide should be in enough by now.
checked the baits after the first 10 minutes and they had'nt been touched so no crabs anyway, lashed them back out as far as i could and waited. rods did,nt even twitch in the next 2 hours and then a little rattle from the bell, looks like a flounder i thought, and then another so picked up the rod and waited for the next one as this could save another blank.
as soon as i felt it i struck and i felt something big on the other end :) .what i first thought to be a flounder i now was sure to be a hound and my biggest yet as it took off to the left running with the current . as it came closer i could see a silvery flashing in the calm waters, it even managed to take some line back as it tried desperatly to break free but as a little wave rolled onto the shore i pulled him in with it ,could'nt believe it as this was the last fish i expected to catch on a night like this. :D a 4.5lb bass
couple of terrible pics and back out the sea, took him a few minutes and then he was gone 8)
no hounds tonight just hope they return

Nice bass very well done to you 8) That must have been a nice surprise when you first seen what it was that you had caught!
In the past on occasions I have arrived at a particular beach or mark and have thought to myself that it looked "too calm" to catch bass from but I fished it anyway and like you I have caught them. It's the beleive of some people that you need a good surf on a beach in order to catch bass from it and if there isn't a surf running up then it's not worth trying but that's not always the case and what happened to you is the perfect example of this, congrats again, that's a fine fish indeed.

Is that the same one who took your avatar pic? :D

An unexpected bass is a bit like found money - more of a pleasure than the stuff you have to work hard for....

cheers kerry ,i was one of those people too,but im wondering now if they just take differently when the sea is settled.think i'll strike more of those suspected flounder bites
