Wicklow Beach 01/07/2010

#1 Post by stevo74 »

People: Myself & Neil.

Duration: 20:30 - 01:30

Tide: HW @ 00:00

Weather: Southerly wind. Slightly overcast then clearing later

Bait: Rag, crab, squid.

Rigs: 2 Hook flappers & pulley

Results: Doggie, flounder & more !

Report:

My quest for a Bass continued tonight........... Was well prepped, tides & weather were to be ideal, so confidence was high and I even said to my bro on the phone earlier that day that I had a good feeling about tonight!

Myself & Neil hit road around 19:30 and arrived at mark around 20:15. Got setup with baits in the water not long after half eight. There was a great surf running so the sea had a very fishy look about it. No long into session I caught a small flounder. All quiet then for the next couple of hours, but even then, don't you also find that time passes by so quick when fishing?
Anyway around midnight, Neil was getting tired and had a sleep for himself (he's only 11), so I manned both rods - The Greys Bze at distance with crab for Smut's and the Seaspin in close with 3 head hooked rag's for whatever fancied it...... Sat down, lit a smoke and watched the two rod tips gently nodding in the now starry sky,the moon then made an appearance and the shore and sea brightened up-moments like this make me feel privileged to be a fisherman. Anyway went to rebait, so picked up the Seaspin and felt a weight on it and started reeling....thinking to myself right it must be a doggy as there is no fight coming off whatever it is......continued reeling and to my surprise saw a Bass at the end as I beached it ! Well I was overcome with joy when I saw that beauty, as it had been nearly 2 years since I have been trying to land a silver bar. It wasn't quite how I imagined losing my Bass virginity but to be honest, I didn't really care because now that I have gotten this monkey off my back, I feel that more Bass will come my way that will test my rod and fighting skills some day soon. The fish measured 49cm and my cheapo weighing scales had it a 2 and 1/2 pounds which means it was probably less. I have some bad quality phone pics which I will put up later as soon as I work out how to :(
Now I know most of you out there are C&R guys, but I couldn't just release my first ever Bass so he was given the last rites by the local priest and put in the cooler to be savoured another day in a different way!

So as the euphoria slowly died down , I just packed up and went home a happy man -THE END.....................well I could've, should've but didn't  ! 3 head hooked rags were now the order of the day(night). I needed another fix but was brought right back down to earth with one of my more usual catch - a dogfish ! It looked at me in a way that only a dogfish can as if to say "Hey, you won't always get to dance with the pretty girl so don't get used to it!"

After another hour I decided to call it quits so I woke Neil, informed him of my catch, then packed up everything and drove back to the bright lights of the City with a big smile on my face :P

FIN
