Roscarberry, West Cork

#1 Post by Eoghan »

Spent the last week down here. Cracking spot. Had the rods with me but also the wife and parents n law, all great crack but not good for fishing..! :-) As a result myself and the father in law spent hours in the pub watching the footie and drinking. Not good for 5am starts for bass fishing. As a result I only got out on the last morning. What a bummer. The place looks like a bass hot spot. Small estuary flowing into the sea with a beach to the left and a pier to the right. Plenty of good spots for redgills I reckon. There are also a few classic bass beaches, Long Strand, and Ownahincha (Spelling) So anyway, I fished just past the pier and on the rocks at low ater at approx 11 am or so. After about 5 casts I had a small bass followed by a mackerel. Thought I was in for some great sport but that was them end of the bass/macks. The channel runs out into the sea and creates nice choppy water for about 50 or so yards out to sea. That where I got the bass and mack. After that I had a few pollock in close, nothing to write home about. So kinda kicked myself I didnt fish earlier in the week. Didnt have camera with me for the fishing but did have my good camera with me for the week. I have attached some pics of the area. Anyone going that way and wants some info let me know and I will pass on anything I have.

Nice one, love the pics. That bird in the top picture certainly knows how to fish anyway! 8)

ha ha, yes the Heron showed me up alright. I sat for about 25 mins just waiting on him to do something. Was worth it in the end. The poor crab in the other shot tried his best but you can figure the outcome of that duel too. Definitly a spot we will go back to. Took just 2 hours from Dublin to Cork and then about 50 mins to Roscarberry.

Great photos,
I fished that beach one time last year, there was a nice surf, with the last hour of the rising tide coinciding with dusk, but I didn't have a single a bite. Had me wondering if it had been netted as it had looked very promising.

Thats mad. It looks amazing. I have read on some sites online since which state it used to be brilliant for Bass but is now not as good as it once was. Like many places I suppose.

you should have tried the other beaches around there area, i know that Roscarberry will throw up some bass but not too many.

Were the mullet not about near the hotel?

Yeah the place was full of mullet. I did try one afternoon for one but after about 10 mins I gave up as all I was doing was feeding swans bread..! :-) Its not as easy as I thought it would be.

Hi Eoghan.
Yes indeed a cracking spot and great pics, hard luck on the fishing front... for any anglers intending to visit west cork, members from westcork&district sac will lend any assistance they can, with marks, where and when, bait selection and any questions visiting anglers may have.local knowledge will always be invaluable to anglers fishing a new venue...i would suggest all anglers visiting a new area should seek out the local club and pick their brains for info,no club will turn down the call for help!it can turn a poor fishing holiday into a great one.....

Cheers mate, yeah I got some crackers over the week. Didnt know we had Egrets in Ireland..! That was an eye opener. The estuary was full of life. Hard to believe the Bass are not there in numbers.
But yeah the camera is a nice alternative if the fishing is poor.
