galway bay shore tope

#1 Post by husshunter »

People:lucky myself

Duration:6 hours

Tide:high 4.17 am

Weather:no a stir of wind

Bait:fresh mack squid

Rigs:pulleys

Results:1 tope 2 dogs

Report:After talking to Alan for the past month or so about getting out doing a bit of fishing as were neighbours,a plan was hatched for last night as both of us were free.
After 3 unsuccessful goes after the tope over the last 2 weeks i mentioned to lucky i wouldnt mind another crack.I told him of a spot where i got spooled 2 weeks ago and that was going to be the chosen venue.
Got down there at around 9ish had a look and tide was nearly fully out, rods out of the car and off on the hike.
First cast alot of weed and a big floating lump pulled my rig into a snag ,rig lost and shockleader. Was thinking not one of these nights again,im probably keeping the local tackle dealer a float with all the tope terminal tackle ive been buying off him of late.
Shockleader on and new rig juicy side of fresh mack and out she went, walked back to lucky and started the olde shite talk saying to him id be awful superised if one of our rods didnt get a bite soon,no sooner had the sentence left my mouth then pop rod springs back in rod rest and slack line ensued.
Got up and half slipped half ran down the slippery rocks to the rod.Lifted the rod brought in the slack and lifted into the fish, weight happy days and then he ran in towards me tightened in quickly and after a few short runs was saying to lucky it was probably a small one, then he shot out of the water ." Good fish says lucky" played him out for another couple of minutes and was ready, tailed by lucky we got him ashore a fine male tope between 30 and 35 lbs maybe new club record no scales so dont know .Great fight and after a couple of minutes reviving him in the flow he swam off, dorsil fin out of the water like a shrunken Jaws.Time for a smoke target aquired!
Soon after luckys drag goes and nice bend in the rod not weed that time we both were thinking then his rod tip sprung back and no weight not even the current, lucky brought it in to reveal 80 lbs shock leader was mangled where a tope must have ran after taking the bait a given the shockleader a lash of his tail.Quiet enough after that with one more run for lucky and a dog for both lucky and myself.Crabs were ever present with baits lasting only 5 minutes.Hike back to the car at 3.30 am seemed a lot longer than the way down,
Sorry no camera but lucky said he would add some pics he took with his phone.

Well done fella's, it sounds like from reading your report that it was a very exciting night you's had.
Well done yanto, that's a fine tope you caught and from the shore too, excellent stuff. Hard luck Alan, hopefully it won't be long until you get one too 8)
