Query re fishing for kids

#1 Post by mikewest »

Hi, I just know this topic is covered somewhere on this site but I haven't found it so far. I am looking for recommendations for day trip for a group of kids (maybe 4) aged 5 to 8 with a few of their parents where the kids would pretty much be guaranteed to catch at least one fish each. I am thinking along the lines of 2 hours to a 1/2 day mackerel fishing out of Enniscrone, Mullaghmore or Killala areas. I am based in Co. Roscommon hence looking at Sligo, Mayo as it is 1 to 1 1/2 hours drive away but Galway is just slightly further. I honestly know very little about fishing apart from a short fishing trip last summer while on holidays, so i am looking for advice on where to start.

If you are interested in trout or course fishing as an alternative plan, you could try the new North Tipperary Angling Centre, Killea, Ballinderry, near Terryglass. Give the owner Pat Stack a bell on 067 22204 and I'm sure he will gladly arrange a nice day's fishing for parents and kids alike on his private lake. Fees are very reasonable and the lake is safe for kids and in a lovely quiet area. Quality Restaurants and Pubs are in the vicinity.

I caught my first fish on a charter boat which left enniscrone peir, sounds what your looking for cause you can go out for 2-3 hours and we always caught a few fish! As far as i know its 10 euro per person(might me more for adults) which is pretty reasonable and all gear was provided!
Mackeral are being caught close to the peir so im sure their getting plenty out on the boat. Good luck!

I will probably do this later in the summer. I had been looking for something like this but the only one I knew of was in wicklow recommended by a mate.

Are they just walk up trips? Can you remember if they run on a Sunday? I brought my two lads on a trip like this last summer in England but never noticed them here.

Ya no need to book, there should be a sign on the pier for them. I might be heading up there next week, if i am il check it out and let ya know. Im not sure about what days they run but in mid summer id imagine they would be nearly everyday. If your near enniscrone ask around and im sure someone will let you know, as i said if im up there il find out for you

Thanks for your help chrisfeeney30. If things go half right this weekend I hope to make it to the seaside maybe even Enniscrone just for beach but I will bring the kids rods and some basic lures and maybe even some bait if (big if) I make it to a fishing shop.
