Painted rock

#1 Post by dickyfish »

Up at the painted rock at Ballylumford and got a mixed bag of small stuff. Doggies, very small flounder and small pollock. Hope to get some photos up. Anybody ever pull anything decent out of here?

have had small ling (not rockling), monster scorpion fish that i could prob fit my head in their mouths, regular double shots of doggies, ballan wrasse up to 5lb, cuckoos, good pollack at times, mackeral, red codling around 1lb just around the corner. if you keep walking on round a good bit through the cow fields towards Portmuck, prob a mile, there are couple marks with one in particular that you climb down to. these arent the safest or most convenient but can be very productive on the right day. the one mark in particular is prob the 2nd mark that stands out and has very good depth but currents can be strong (2or3 doggies at a time against current is exhausting)
it is a tackle graveyard, but often when using 2 hook traces with straight cast and yanking up before reeling can get away with 4-5 casts. the mark i fish is the one on steepest rocks, which is safest esp. with currents and ferries. also watch out for lobster men trailing pot ropes incase you lose a rod. also watch out for bulls, lol.
doesn't sound the most appealing, but worth fishing for chance of something big as it's a lot lot deeper than painted rock and fish colouring can be very vibrant red from living in kelp

ps. i've never caught on the float round there despite trying, but caught pollack/mackeral higher in the water on lures for some reason
