ray hunt 2 and 6 June

#1 Post by peterw »

The beach fishing lately has been making up for most of last year and with the bass ban in effect (not that I've landed one yet  ) it was time to get back to the rock marks for some Rays .
I set up my 2 rods and went spinning with the leadhead for pollack . I hadn't walked 20 yards when Doug shouted on me and I turned around to see him holding up a nice flounder .
After 15 or 20 minutes with no joy after the pollack I came back to base when Doug's rod tip took a lunge , he picked up the rod , didn't feel like anything so he put it down again only for it to rattle again , we thought it might be mackerel so he brought it in . Turbot   . Nice one , not bad for a ray hunt , 2 flats with 2 casts .Sadly no more fish after that.
6th June.
Went back to the mark again , I was only interested in ray so I was using clip up rigs with a long trace baited with sand eel . I had the feathers on the go to see if i could contact with some mackies , none . I noticed the line on one of my rods had gone very slack so I wound in and the rod was nodding away.
It didn't feel like a big fish , it must have been kiting in with me but in the last few yards I saw the light colured body I knew it wasn't a thornie. In the meantime the ray had managed to turn around and swim away from me , luckily the rag had formed a lassoo round it's tail . I wasn't letting this one escape so I took a wee bit of a splash to grab it which was lucky because the hook was only through the skin outside it's mouth. My second painted this year , and in Mayo too . :D
