Report: nice little session! the perfect summer weather made for a really pleasurable night. from the off the fish showed up in small numbers. with myself getting a few poor cod and a decentish wrasse. john then produced his first ever shore caught ling which made the night really! then he went on to produce codling and pollock to pretty decent size too! in the meantime i had to settle for smaller fish. the conger rods which were stactic for most of the time went haywire come darkness. first with me loosing a pretty decent lobster after the claw parted company from the rest of it at the surface and john missing two very solid runs.

interestingly a pod of 6 or more bottlenose dolphins showed up about 300 yards of the shore. quite amazing to be honest. they're some size too. definintley too big to be porpoises. lovely sight. the night rolled on and eventually i got my first ling of the season and a small tompot. really enjoyable fishing!

Well done Eric and John,,,,i'm just guessing it was 6pm-1am and not the other way round?? If it was I saw the pod myself a bit further down the coast,,,,very large ,i got a few pics, amazing sight,they came up just 40-50yds from where I was fishing. Must have a go at that mark with you sometime Eric .Congrats to you both on the shore caught ling,beauties ,and those pollock and codling are beauts too

Was a good relaxin session and a few nice species too ! petty about the conger but never the less was nice to get some pretty agressive runs off them

But can't help but speculate the mark looks a lot like 40 Foot,
Sandycove: isn't that out of bounds with DLRCoCouncil fishing Bye-Laws?!
What with resolving potential conflicts with swimmers and all.

I could be wrong and maybe you've made some gentleman's arrangement with
Sandycove Bathers' Assoc'n.

ive been fishing that spot since i was 8 and vowed, law or no law that i would never stop. the swimmers there are pretty reasonable folk, most of them anyway. give them respect and ultimatley you'l get it back in return. dont fish it during the day thats their time. be carefull as well you will get cut off at high water and the swell can turn up at any time from the ferries. my fear is that some yobs are going to turn up and wreck the place. be courteous at all times, acting like a cnut will invitabley see a crack down on the enforcement on the laws!

Couldn't agree more that's the attitude that all concerned should have.
Watched a guy the other day trolling right down past the swimmers at the forty foot inside the two yellow markers as I was drifting outside them looked like he was just putting the two fingers up to them, no call for that.

there was a pod of around 15 bottlenose dolphins spotted around dublin bay /seapoint during the winter, they might have become residents

Up to 13 bottlenose dolphins were observed chasing fish in to Seapoint Bay this morning, giving watchers a great display of aerial acrobatics.

Liz and Philip Hickey watched with amazement as up to 13 dolphins were leaping outside their house. They have lived in Seapoint for 10 years but had never seen dolphins in the bay before. Liz contacted the Mooney show on RTE who made contact with the IWDG.


Arthur Reynolds, retired editor of the Irish Skipper, who also lives at Seapoint, told the IWDG that he thought the dolphins were feeding on whiting fry that are presently in the bay.

Bottlenose dolphins are seen regular seen in Dublin Bay but rarely stay for a long periods. An image of one dolphins from a group observed by Susan Early on 2 June 2008 was sent to the IWDG who matched it to an image taken of the same dolphin photographed by Joanne O'Brien of GMIT in Galway Bay on 31 August 2008. This dolphin made around a 600km journey in around 90 days. This remarkable re-sighting suggests bottlenose dolphins are travelling around the entire Irish coast.


The IWDG have recently proposed to the National Parks and Wildlife Service that more Special Area of Conservation are required for both bottlenose dolphins and harbour porpoise to protect their habitats and ensure they continue to thrive in Ireland.

The dolphins soon left the bay after their breakfast and the IWDG are interested to hear of any more sightings.

I spotted these heading north much earlier in the day off the north wexford coast, some of them were jumping clean out of the water a lovely site tried to get photos but could not get the timing right.

Yeah I had the same problem with photos. Best to take a video and use one of the stills
