Wicklow Harbour, 2-06-10

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me

Duration:3pm-8pm

Tide:HW approx 5-30pm

Weather:calm, sunny

Bait:rag,lug,mack

Rigs:2 hook flapper, mini rig

Results:corkwing wrasse, ballan wrasse, pouting, codling, tompot blenny, dogfish, scorpion fish, pollock

Report:Went to Wicklow Harbour in search of wrasse to add to the species list and I wasnt disappointed.I was pleasantly surprised to see only a handful of anglers there , and I soon set up with 1 rod out and 1 rod down the side for minis and wrasse. First drop produced a ballan wrasse and I had a busy time over the next few hours with both rods .Bits of rag were tempting the wrasse etc but as usual there were more missed fish than hook ups, clever buggers these Wicklow Harbour residents. The distance rod was picking up a fair bit of stringy weed but overall it wasnt too bad and I wasnt getting snagged which is always a bonus here with the submerged ropes  .First fish at distance(80 yds ) was a doggie on rag and I had a succession of dabs and scorpion fish at distance on the rag. Some lads who left gave me some lug and this resulted in me getting a succession of codling from roughly the same spot one after the other up to about 25cms. I had a corkwing wrasse and then a Tompot blenny which gave me 3 new species for the session. It was a nice relaxing few hours which produced dozens of fish including a corker of a Ballan Wrasse (for me  ) at 33cms, really chunky ,gave me a great fight on the small rod  , the pic doesnt do him(or me  ) justice. Some nice young lads there ,nice to see them cleaning up their litter when they left. .Didnt see any macks landed but I left early enough at 9pm as I had run out of bait and the thoughts of the New Territory's chicken curry got the better of me.
Footnote,I was a much calmer person in work today after my 2 sessions

Hi Eyesreilly

The 2 kids picked up a few whiting, Wrasse & Dog Fish after you left. It really made their day, it's usual that I blank when I'm with them. Wow, from the pictures you were busy some nice fish landed there.

Hope to you see down there again, should have asked me for some bait I had loads and gave away it all to guy fishing there using feathers when we left.

People work to look forward to fishing, for those who can't fish stay in work there's nothing better.
