Co.Down mullet - K2 gets his account opened up here at home!

#1 Post by KERRY1 »

People: K2 (I was stuck in work! :( )

Date: Wednesday 2nd June 2010.

Weather: Dry, warm & sunny

Bait: Bread

Methods used: Float set-up

Results: 1 thick-lipped mullet

Report

Since it was such a nice day K2 decided to go out fishing and try for the mullet to get his account opened for the year up here after fishing for them and catching them down in Co. Kerry back in both March and May just past.

Although it is still abit early for them up here compared to places further down South where they have been about in great numbers since March or earlier in the piers and harbours we have seen a few knocking about at a couple of marks locally. That is why K2 decided to go and try for them yesterday. With any luck it shouldn’t be too long before there arrive in greater numbers which will be great.

As soon as he arrived down at the location yesterday K2 got his gear on and waded into the water right away and started to walk around the area to see if there were any fish about. He could see a few but not in huge numbers as there can be at this particular place and so he moved on out into deeper water to see if there was any there.
As he walked out he disturbed a few fish that where very close to him in the water and so he stopped and decided to fish in that spot for a while.

He threw bread in to see if he could entice them in closer to him. He then cast out his float in the direction of a shoal of fish that he had spotted in front of him. After three casts he struck what was a good bite but his initial thoughts where that he was caught on the bottom. He soon realised though seconds later that he was in fact into a fish and after a good scrap which lasted about 12 minutes or so he landed his fish, unhooked it and released it back into the water again.

Unfortunately we have no picture because his photographer was at work and couldn’t be there to take a picture for him! I am so annoyed that I didn’t get to see the fish but hopefully there will be plenty of opportunities this summer to get more. Fingers crossed. I still wanted to do a report despite not having a picture because it’s the first mullet he has caught up here at home this year which is great. He is away today again to try for them and this time I made sure he has a camera with him incase he is lucky enough to get another one.

There was a couple of spectators up there yesterday who were watching him fish but they weren’t fishing themselves, he was the only one out in the water.

So, that’s my report. I have tried to recall the day’s events as K2 told them to me as best that I could. His account up here with the mullet is opened/started. After a few unsuccessful attempts at them over the weekend this was a much welcomed catch for him. Now I just have to get one too!

I am going out with him tonight to another location to fish for them, fingers crossed there is some fish there.
The good news is that the mullet have arrived back in up here for the summer. With abit more warmer weather there should be more present very soon.

I can see plenty of very frustrating days and nights ahead trying to fish for them but I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else, they are great to fish for.

Cheers Ivan. Hopefully we'll have a good year, fingers crossed. Yeah - it sucks being stuck in work while he's out fishing :( and then he phones me up telling me what he has caught and what a nice day it is- how evil!

Cheers Martin. You should give them a go sometime, once you start you will love it! But your right, valium would come in very handy as they do drive you mad!

Thanks John, good luck with them yourself at the weekend. Did they show much interest in the bread that you threw into them the other day?
Getting them feeding can be the difficult thing to do, once you’ve done that then your half way there.

Myself, K2 and Al & Jordan off the site went out last night to a couple of places to see if there was any mullet about but the water was very low at the marks we went too so we didn't even bother setting up our gear. The tides are quite small at the minute which is the reason the water has been so low and didn't seem to move very much.
We had a nice night anyway and enjoyed the weather, it was good catching up with them again.
We plan on giving it another go very soon so Al if you are reading this we'll get your and Jordan's mullet for you yet for your species list mate.

I find Mullet to be one of my most challenging target species, and always have a sense of respect when I see an angler posting up a report that includes one.

Thanks marshpike for your kind comments. You are right. Mullet are one of the most challenging species to target in the sea around our coast. They would drive you mad! But it's the challenge that makes me love fish for them so much, because it's not easy and straight forward. When you do manage to outwit them it's a great feeling because they are a very smart fish.
