Best rig for species hunting

#1 Post by evan699 »

I fish inner cork harbour regularly in a small boat. I know all the rigs to use for targeting single species but i was just wondering was there any rig that someone would reccomend for just chucking onto the bottom and finding out whats about.

Cheers,
Evan

Fishing inside or outside the harbour and over clean ground I use a Spreader Bar with 20” snoods off it, size 1 hook and add a few beads for a bit of colour to it. I’d often attach a boom about 12” above the spreader and attach a short snood to it. A 6oz watch lead it ample.

For over the rough ground a 2 hook paternoster rig or a set of hokkais will do fine.

Thanks donal. I dont' have spreader bars or the time to make them as i'm going out this evening. I'll try to grab something in the tackle shop before i go. If not i'll get somethin sorted for the weekend and give it a try. :)

A simple three down rig will work as well. Two small hooks of the droppers and a larger one on the tail hook.

Massive fan of 3 down. Something like this below works incredibly well on the drift or at anchor inside the harbour. Add some small silver blades for a bit of extra flash too if you can get them. Out of 40 species last year I would say the guts of 30 of them had at some point been caught on this or very similar trace. Lee (scotsman) will hear me out on the effectiveness of this trace. Usually tie with 20lb Amnesia and size 4 short shank Kamasan hooks. Keep the droppers fairly short around 4-6 inches and bait with nice slim slivers of mackerel.

Cheers for the help lads. I got some spreader bars and tied a few of those rigs. Now i just need the weather to start playing ball and i'll be laughing (hopefully). Keep an eye on the boat reports section for "the mishka" and i'll let ye know how i'm gettin on.
