Limerick - Shannon Estuary May 24, 2010

#1 Post by simplywabs »

People: Me & Gabriel

Duration: 2.5 hours

Tide: Flooding

Weather: Perfect

Bait: Fresh Macks

Rigs: 2 hook flappers

Results: several good sized whiting, several dabs and a flounder

Report: Been itching to get a few short sessions on weekdays. At last - Gabriel has half day in school. Took this opportunity and got all gears ready to surprise Gabriel and drag him to fishing.

We took off early in the afternoon as soon as he arrived home and went around town trying to find fresh macks. We spend almost half an hour going around and found nithing in all Rene Cussack shops    . I almost gave up looking for it and settle for frozen ones when I got hold of fresh macks from the new fish shop at the top of William steet.

Off we go to the mark and as soon as we arrived we did setup immediately and within a minute, I felt the first bite even before the bait landed at the bottom. Hmmmm... seems like they are waiting for us :) :) :) . Good start! Whiting of about 30cm. We then setup our second rod and off it went and bang another small bite and got a dab. It was a pretty busy afternoon overall and never got to stop casting and reeling in for the next 2.5 hours which unfortunately prevented me from taking pictures. It was onew of the best short sessions I had combined with a perfect weather. Almost all fish went back with little trauma except for the flounder who did die due the hook being too deep in the gills :( :( :( .

Gabriel and I had a great time and we look forward to our next session.

Will be more aware on taking pictures next time.

Sounds like ye had a busy session, well done, I went down that way on Saturday to try for the Mullet I had seen the day before by loghil,
Tried to get them feeding on mashed up bread / porridge / mackerel / whiting and a good drop of fish oil, I could see about six of them coming towards me so I went up ahead of them and found a spot with 3ft of water and dumped in four balls of the mix and sat there watching the mix break up nicely and by the time they got to it there was some of it floating with little bits dropping to the bottom so I was thinking the ambush was perfect but they just swam around it and tripped on up river :( ,

I find it amazing how in some areas they feed on anything while in others they blank any food you throw at them, I suppose if it was easy to catch them all the time the fun would be gone out of it,

That was a nice size whiting you got, I thought all the big ones would be gone from there as the water is warming up,
