564 Fish with the Army Lads in Cork
People:Eastern Command SAC, 14 anglers
Duration: Sat 22nd & Sun 23rd May
Tide: High water around Midday
Weather: Costa Del Cork, Scorching
Bait: Rag and Mackerel (frozen)
Rigs: Shamrock Packet Gears, Gilling traces and home-made specials
Results: see report 564 fish and 12 Species
Eastern Command SAC would like to Thank Shamrock Tackle For Sponsoring our event by supplying in Excess of €250 worth of Rigs which were equally spread out amongst the anglers the night previous, Dave in Southside Angling for his great service to our members and his Sponsorship of Vouchers, Dave Tilly for Supplying a Quality Bait for the event which made it a success for us.
It all started with the collection of the bait form Celtic Baits in Ringsend, 14 anglers fishing for 2 days need a lot of bait, so no better man than Brother Tilly, So a few boxes of rag each and the bit of frozen and we were on our way, We were advised to bring some frozen Mackerel with us, as there was no guarantee's of picking them up in Cork, aren't we glad we listened.
We booked our boats through Donie Geary in Cork, we chartered John Boy (Donie Geary) and The Lagosta II(Alan Kennedy)
2 Fantastic Skippers, kept working all day to keep us on fish, marked up the cards and carried out the role of steward on the day and of course had the Kettle constantly going, a real pleasure to fish with.
Report:so on with the report, in total there were 564 fish that went to the measure with a considerable amount that didn't, I have broken it down in to Species and highest amounts,
1. Ling ( 156 )
2. Pollack ( 132 )
3. Pouting ( 88 )
4. Cookoo Wrasse ( 69 )
5. Cod ( 52 )
6. Grey Gurnard ( 38 )
7. Ballan Wrasse ( 14 )
8. Whiting ( 10 )
9. Coalfish ( 2 )
10. Haddock ( 1 )
11. LSD ( 1 )
12 Red Gurnard ( 1 )
As you can see the most prolific species were Ling, Pollack, Pouting and Cookoo's, these were mostly caught with Packet rigs and Gilling, My advice is to have a rig with pink muppets as it stood out to be catching most of the fish.
we set out at 10 O'Clock on both Morning's to start fishing at 11 O'Clock for 2 x 3 hours sessions, unfortunately Mackerel were likes hens teeth, none to be found, over the course of the weekend less than 10 were caught, just as well we brought our frozen bait. Fishing on both days was quite Identical so there was no need to stay up all night tying new rigs (wrassebasher)
we headed out on the the smiths both days and with a neap tide and no real wind other than a gentle breeze the boats were relatively static, this didn't do us any favours, but the fish kept coming at a steady pace, with the best fish going to one of our senior members Christy Johnston at the last minute a nice 91.5cm Ling approx 10lbs beating Gerry Tracey's 90cm Ling.
most of the Lads decided to put their Sponsored rigs to use, with one rig in particular standing out, a Shamrock Sabiki rig with A black, lumi and pink muppet, Oh My God did it fish well, one of the Lads had 8 ling in one 3 hour session on it as well as other species, just by tiping it with a small bit of mackerel.
Thanks too all who supported us and provided their services for a fantastic weekend and we look forward to going down again for 3 days at the end of June
1st Mick Barry ( 400% ) Qualified for Masters 2011
2nd Colm Kelly ( 359%)
3rd Gary Condren ( 333%)
