Some Figures regarding the Recreational Bass Fishery

#1 Post by jd »

Here are some Headline figures from the survey

From question 7 through to question 18 respondents were asked to respond about their levels and patterns of expenditure. Levels of expenditure over a three year period were sought and these were averaged out to give per annum figures. This was done so as to compensate for the impact that the recession may have had over the previous 12 months. From the responses garnered the following findings can be extrapolated (see Appendix 6):
·	Irish Sea anglers spend €182.5M approx per annum in Ireland in pursuit of their sport.
 ·	Approximately 45% of all Irish Sea anglers fish for bass.
 ·	Of those anglers who fish for bass, approximately 52.45% of their expenditure relates to bass fishing.

Total expenditure by Irish anglers in Ireland on bass fishing €43,000,000

Contribution of Irish Bass Recreational Fishery to Irish Economy (Non-Irish Anglers) €8,650,000

Total Contribution of Irish Bass Recreational Fishery to Irish Economy €51,650 ,000
A report with further details is being drawn up.

This is excellent work JD; hard figures like these are worth infinitely more than any amount of speculation and anecdote when dealing with the government. You've done us all a great service by putting these together. Míle Buíochas!

It's worth noting too that the money being spent here is to an extremely large degree being channelled back into the small and medium sized enterprises that make up nearly two thirds of the Irish economy. These business (a) keep the money in the country, (b) recycle it back into the economy through regular cashflow and (c) generate indigenous employment. Moreover, there's a strong spillover from angling into hotels, pubs, restaurants, cafés, chippers and the like. In fact it's hard to think of any activity more effective than angling in spreading money through the economy––particularly in isolated rural areas that might not have any other industries outside of farming.

Let's hope the new fisheries minister has the intelligence to take note!

Excellent work. Hopefully the powers that be have enough sense to acknowledge these figures and act on preventing a decline in them... Looking forward to the breakdowns.
