Newbies fishing around Cork

#1 Post by Alvadar »

Hi guys,

me and a friend of mine started to try shore angling 2 weeks ago. Both of us never tried angling before but we like it very much.
So we tried out some places around cork (Ringaskiddy, Church Bay and Monkstown).
The second day we were out we catched a Bass with a Sandeel with a float at Church Bay. Yehaa our first success. :)
We know that we are not allowed to fish for bass for 1 Month now but after that we want to improve our fishing skills.
I think 1 Bass on 4 days with 2 guys trying to catch them is not really a good result and we are still so hungry.

In the beginning of the next month we wanted to try angling in fountainstown but we have no idea which fish you should try to catch.
My friend wants to catch a ray there. Do you think that it is good there to catch ray or for me makerel?
And do I catch Makerel with Sandeels too?

I think you already mentioned that my English isnt very good. Thats because I live in Cork for only 1 year now.
Before I lived in Germany. I will try to improve it. :)

Greetings Alvadar

fountainstown can be good for mackeral. just go into any tackle shop and buy some feathers, get them in strings of 3's, as they are much easier to cast than 6. fish off the rocks on the left side of the beach but might be another few weeks before there in properly.
ive heard of a few rays being caught there but you will need a good cast to reach them. try mackeral, sandeel or peeler crab for them.

Thanks a lot. I think I have to inform myself about those feathers. =) Thanks for the hint!

If I understand the guides correct I do not need anything else as a lure then those feathers. I just attach them on one end and on the other end of the line a weight, right?

I hope I am not writing unfriendly. :) I really try. ^^

yep, thats it. cast them out and leave them sink a little, lift the rod up, and wind when your putting it down, then lift up and so on.
if your fishing in the evening i find the silver ones the best. myrtlyville just up the road can be good too but very busy. for there a high tide an hour before it gets dark should get you loads of them in july/august.
