The Mishka, Cork Harbour, 13th May

#1 Post by evan699 »

People: Me and my dad
Time: 18.00 - 20.30
Bait: Razor, Black Lug and Peeler
Rigs: Pennel running ledger (2/0 and 6/0 pennel)

Arrived in crosshaven just as the sun started to break through after a few showers. Headed out into the harbour near carlisle fort and drifted up towards white bay. Baited up my rig with razor and dropped it to the bottom, i was baiting my dads rig when i started getting good bites on my rod, the bait wasn't on the bottom more than a minute. I wound into a good weight and after a fairly spirited fight i landed the first fish of the day, a codling of 48cm. The cod was hooked on the top (2/0) hook on the pennel, and alot of the fish we caught were. We landed a total of 25 codling, Most were a fairly good stamp of fish averaging around 2-3lbs. Razor was the best bait of the night but lug and crab worked well too. We had 5 whiting which were of no good size. I'm doing my best to get my dad interested in fishing which seems to be working well after last night. He even has the one that got away story as his rig was bitten clean off about 3 foot from the surface after a fairly tough fight. Conger? He was gutted. I left my camera in the car so only got one or two shots of the fish we took away for the supper. That fishing business is thirsty work so we retreated to johnnys return for a few pints and to catch the second half of the match. Great evenings fishing and a bit of niceish weather too. Loads of big mullet under the jettys too when we were tying up the boat but i didn't have any gear to try hook one of them so i'll be down there again at the weekend i think.

Ha ha. I barely have enough time for fishin with the one i have. I've tried gettin her out fishin too but it tends to end in disaster.

Enjoyable night, enjoyable report, and nice pix :D

OK about the Da, I have the opposite problem - trying to get The Son interested; be needing the back-up as the joints get creakier! I'll be watching your progress for tips....

Dont give up with the girlfriend just yet, I trained Herself to operate the boat and once she felt in charge of things (as usual :D ), the interest level shot up.... 8)
