Flatfish ( namely plaice and turbot)
Hi, all my boat fishing has been limited to rays, buss huss, congers etc and jigging for cod and pollack, but an opportunity has arose to fish for flatfish. Any advice on bait, tackle , tactics for fishing for flatties from a boat? Have caught big flounder from mullrany strand and other beachs in clew bay, and am wondering would fishing close to these be a good bet? thanks

Target for 2017: Tope, Bass, Specimen shore pollack, Specimen Sea trout, Turbot over 30cm, common skate

never fished for flatties of a boat,we have had ray just of mullaranney beach on mary gavin-hughes boat,i recon you would have a better chance of flounder near furance estuary, and you might have a chance of turbot of white strand louisburgh also a good chance for ray here too.fresh lug for flounder, fish baits for turbot,as for rigs, flounder spoons, and one down two up cast away from the boat for turbot.(

Re: Flatfish ( namely plaice and turbot)
yeah white strand seems to be great spot for the flatties judging by recent reports
i was out there lately and all i got were tiny flounder on fresh lug. Just curious of trying it from a boat, because the family boat always used for pollack fishing out inishturk clare island direction so species doesnt come into it... id imagine the back of the light house would hold big flounders aswell on the mud. id say itl just take abit of experimentation...

A long flowing trace , small hooks with plenty of beads and maybe a spoon fished over sand in August,September should be productive for flatties.Bait with mackerel for turbot and rag tipped with mackerel for plaice.Probably get a few gurnard and doggies too but fished on drift should aviod dogs.
Usually where there is a good run of a tide is attractive to flatties, ask a trawlerman and he should point you in the right direction.
