Into the west 2

#1 Post by mann »

People: I

Duration: 7 Hours

Tide: Down and up

Weather: Fantabalistic

Bait: Mackerel / Razor / squid and sticky blacks.

Rigs: all sorts

Results: Dab / Pollock / Wrasse / Whiting / Haddock / Ling / Codling / Mackerel / Flounder / Octopus and a flat ???

Report:

Left Kilkee around 10am and fished until 12 with only a dab to show for it, decided to take a trip a little further up the coast, it was such a nice day to be out there that I wouldn’t have minded too much if the dab was the only thing to be caught,
But I’m happy to say it was one of my best days out ever because of the weather / calm sea and finding a new mark with enough Pollock and wrasse to keep me busy for a couple of hours and I have to say pulling the fish up from well over 100ft of water left me weak as a kitten,

The Pollock at this mark are not the biggest 2- 4lb but the wrasse around the 3 to 4lb mark had me tired out so I decided to move nearer home and had a new lease of life about half way so dropped a line and the action was hectic, the lead would just make it to the bottom and bang they were on, first came the whiting then as I drifted I hit into the haddock / little ling / flounder / cod and octopus,

As I tried to unhook the octopus he locked onto to my hand and I was surprised just how strong the suction pads can be,

Also caught this other flat fish but I don’t know what species it is, and I have to stick up a picture of the specimen cuckoo wrasse that saved me blanking last week, as far as I can recall the wrasse was 33cm long and my biggest to date, could have got a specimen cert for it but as far as I know you have to kill it for the piece of paper saying you caught it, No thanks.

But I did kill a nice Pollock and just ate most of it with a whiting fried in beer batter, and now I’m drinking the rest of the six pack that I had to buy to make the batter :D :D :D

Hi Mike,
Great to see that your out fishing, almost ready with mine.

Is that a mackerel u caught or did it come from the fridge? Were there many other boats in the bay yet?

Nice fishing. I'm pretty sure that your flatfish is a megrim.

Yea dude, its the one and only mackerel i caught so far this year, it was mixed in among the whiting and haddock and looked like it was well fed,
i will be using it today as bait :).
