Tide: FT 8:15 pm ish
Weather: Calm, wonderful surf
Bait: mackeral, black lug & razor
Rigs: 3 hook flapper size 2, 1 hook ledger 2/0
Results: 2 sea-trout
Report:
I was up in Enniscrone for the week up to and over Easter weekend, but only managed to get fishing once. The weather in general was a disaster as I had planned to go Monday 29th and 30th but their was a serious gale with sleet, snow and hail so I gave it a miss. The weather calmed down on Wednesday but the sea was still full of white water to the horizan. I took walk on the beach with the kids on Thursday and could see that the water was looking better by the hour. Went back to base and took the bait out the freezer and tied some rigs and sorted the gear. I had left an old Diawa rod and tripod up there and had brought up my penn Jetstream, so I could fish with two rods with ease. I hit the right hand side of the beach to get away from the horde of surfers at the mouth of the Bellawaddy river. Over the years apart from the "bar" I have found the extreme right the next best spot and the promenade gives you easy access to deeper water. Initially I fished the beach with the 3 hook flapper in close and the 1 hook ledger out as far as I could hit it. I initally tried cocktails of lug/mack, razor, lug and mackeral on the 3 hook and razor on the single. After 2 casts with each rod the tide was rising fast and I decided to move to the prom as it was surpisingly quite and I wouldn't be plagued with the usual questions from curious walkers. I knocked the 3 hook rig back towards the beach within the tables and the 1 hook 45 degrees out into deeper water. I had the tripod set on the concrete prom and had to watch it as the surf was still big but very uniform. Had to say it was wonderful just to fish it. Previous visits had me pretty dispontant as I had blanked on my last few visits and had hoped for a flattie of any type or size as they seem to have disappeared from the venue. I felt it was far to early for Bass but did think I may get a sea trout. Anyway second cast on the 3 hooker and I noticed that the line was moving againts the tide. I picked it up and felt the fish immediatly, it quickly jumped but I managed to get up on the prom. A quick unhook and a pic on my new phone and I put him back, just around the 1lb mark. 30 mins later I had another on mackeral on the rod out far. THis time I seen the bite as the tip jumped. It kept low and I wasn't sure if it was a another trout. A better fish of about 1.5lb and released again. I was low on bait and packed up after a while but overall delighted although still no flats up there.
