Wicklow 30/03/10
People:Myself
Duration:7:30 till 11.30
Tide:HW around midnight
Weather:soft
Bait:rag
Rigs:2 and 3 hook flappers, pennel pulley
Results:1 whiting,1 rockling, 1 coalie,9 bass,6 codling
Report:Spent most of the day looking out a choppy sea (was working in Dun Laoghaire),and as soon as I was finished I headed down Wicklow direction with 40 rag in tow. Conditions looked perfect when I arrived, lovely surf. I didn't bother with the second rod as it only casts 3oz, not a chance of it holding. Got into the schoolies straight away, 3 on the first 3 casts, happy days. Then I somehow managed 7 bass bites in a row without hooking up. I was getting so frustrated I wasn't thinking straight and it took a hour and a half before I realised that the hooks were too big (2/0's). Changed down to a flapper and got back into the fish straight away, lesson learned. Got one double of 30cm bass which put a great bend in the rod and set the heart racing, was sure I was into a bass over the 40cm mark (it would only be my second ever), but was still happy with the double. All in all a great night, best result for a session on one rod (still fairly new to this).
Headed down the beach, after packing up,towards the only other light in the area. Turned out to be Roger de dodger which at least confirmed my pebble detecting skills. Nice to meet you Roger and thanks for all the handy hints.
Sorry but no pics, I'll be shot if I'm caught taking the good camera from the house. On that subject can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, durable, idiot proof camera for the beach.

I have a waterproof fuji Digital camera, costy about €200 but its lasted despite being knocked around and being left in the tackle box, and its idiot proof, I can even use it
I saw you down the beach, well your light at least and my dog Maggie was keen to go down and say hello, she kept growling every time she faced down the beach and saw your light

Great session there Nightowl and welcome to the site, reminds me of a session I had there last year, with 11 bass
.Got 3 on a 3 hook flapper ,all around the 30cms mark as well,,,great fun,oh the memories
My camera is a Panasonic ( dmc lc33 to be exact
),thats my cheap one,but dont tell herself i said that
,it takes a good picture all by itself, i just push the idiotproof(heart shaped ) button. Its not waterproof, but there again, unlike Shane(Bigsod) i dont dive underwater on these Wicklow strands
.I've used it now for 2 years and the son even borrowed it last weekend for his beloveds Debs Ball once I gave it a quick spray with deodorant

Re: Wicklow 30/03/10
Too costly at the moment, I need much more important stuff like a bass rod, reel, backup headlamp ect. Glad you didn't send Maggie down on her own, don't know how I'd handle 'Dogs In The Mist'.bigsod wrote:I have a waterproof fuji Digital camera, costy about €200 but its lasted despite being knocked around and being left in the tackle box, and its idiot proof, I can even use itI saw you down the beach, well your light at least and my dog Maggie was keen to go down and say hello, she kept growling every time she faced down the beach and saw your light

Re: Wicklow 30/03/10
Thanks for the welcome. Think I'll go cheap and cheerful with the camera, nearly had a heart attack browsing through the prices. I can get overly excited when it comes to bass and I know some night I,ll end up in the drink with the camera in my pocket. As for giving someone anything from my smelly tackle box to bring to a Debs......................................eyesreilly wrote:Great session there Nightowl and welcome to the site, reminds me of a session I had there last year, with 11 Bass![]()

You got it in one. Sorry for rushing off but I was a bit stressed. Spent the whole day planning on going fishing, then it looked like I wouldn't get out of work on time to pick up the rag. Bloody work.Congo wrote:A nightowl, you must be the fella i was chattin to in dun laoghaire! I knew i'd see a result from those 40 rag on here!!

Tiny, biggest was about 23cm, smallest was smaller than the bait he attacked on a 3/0 pennel pulley, greedy little bugger.plumster wrote:sounds like a great session ,what size were the codling

Re: Wicklow 30/03/10
nice fishing night owl
some good signs the east coast is livening up
. i got a cheap vivitar digital camera 4 years ago from lidl that we keep in our fishing bag for all our reports. still going strong and was only £50. just keep whatever camera you buy in one of those plastic press and seal or ziplock food bags
. we've been soaked to the bone on many occasions, but the camera was saved
