Portrush Co Antrim 20/3/10

#1 Post by JAMMYJOEY »

People: Me and Jonny

Duration: 17:50 to 00:25

Tide: H/W 21:30

Weather: Light onshore breeze, clear sky and cold

Bait: Rag, mackeral, squid and sandeel

Rigs: 2 hook clipped and pennel for squid

Results: Jonny 1 coalfish (20cm), Me 1 seatrout (3 1/2 to 4 lb est)

Report: Decided to fish the north coast as the tides were a bit early for us on the east. Turned out to be a good move.

Arrived and got set up, as usual full of anticipation. Settled down with a cuppa and waited. And waited and waited. And nothing happened. We didn't have a bite for over 3 1/2 hours tilll Jonny got his coalie. The fishing was completly dire.

There was a fair surf running and it was very hard to keep the baits out while the tide was on the rise and we also had problems with weed. We thought Jonny had been getting some great bites early on but this turned out to be a huge lump of weed.

About 21:50 i got a ferocious series of bites and then the line went slack. It looked just the same as Jonny had gotten earlier so i wasn't too hopeful but i went over to the rods to tighten the line up. I wound and wound but couldn't seem to get contact with my gear. Eventually the line started to tighten and to my surprise i could feel a fish thumping on the end.

The fish had picked up the bait and run towards the shore. It felt like a good fish and for probably the first time ever i started to worry about landing the fish. Jonny had moved about 100 yards away and he didn't hear me yelling for him to come up and help so i had to try to bring the fish in on the surf and get it beached somewhere that i could get down from the promenade and lif it myself.

I got the fish to the base of the prom and from where i was it looked like i had fooked a nice bass. I was chuffed to bits and made my way down to collect it. When i picked it up i was even more made up when i realised it was a seatrout. I got it up and made my way down to Jonny to show him the fish. When he looked up he couldn't believe it.

Needless to say he moved back up beside me! Sadly that was the end of the action for the night but the drive home was very pleasant. I'm over the moon as this is my first seatrout and after that i hope it's not the last.

The mullet have arrived on the North Coast. A local harbour was alive with them 10 days ago.

I saw a load of mullet in a wee bay in North Down last week.

It must be warmer than it feels!
