Dunno, their fly rods were surprisingly good. Don't actually see them on there this year though, or I'd get another.

This gear is absolute muck and should never be reccommended to anyone.

There is a difference between cheap and value for money and this stuff is less than cheap.

I think even to even put a link to it on this forum degrades and cheapens SAI as a serious angling site :(

It sadens me to think that these twigs could be recommended to new anglers, it would put them off angling for life
UP THE DEISE!!!!!!!

   dunno about that guys. i can only comment on the products i bought in the last 2 years and it goes a bit like this.
i bought the 3 piece beach rod and reel combo 2 years ago and both are still going strong. in fact the reel that came with it is one of my every day use reels. i was so impressed with it that i bought another one in last year's sale. the reel is still going strong too. i did break the rod, but that was my own fault as i had'nt properly pushed the sections togeather properly before casting it's max weight    . the rod is soft the whloe way through, and that would be the only flaw i could find with it.
i bought the 50 pack of chemical lights, absolute bargin at £2.99. all worked fine.
i bought the lure set with spinners and stuff. all worked well.
1 also bought the telescopic pike rod. rod and reel are still going strong 2 years down the line too.
jordan bought the boat rod and reel combo with depth counter. other than the depth counter packing in both are still working just fine 2 years later. in fact he uses it for all his conger fishing, both shore and boat. it still has no problem hauling up eels from 300 feet below the boat wilt 2lb of lead attached.

as for any of the other stuff, i can't comment as i did'nt buy any of it. but any one who knows us will tell you we're not exactly over carefull with our gear. most just gets chucked into the back of the motor until our next trip. and we're out at least twice a week fishing, so it's all been put through it's paces

I agree with Al and Jordan, I bought a reel a few years ago for €30 & its out lived all the more expensive reels Iv had, Iv never had any problem with it & have caught Pollack up to 9.5 lb & numerous Wrasse to 6 lb with it from the shore & for a reel that gets flung into the boot & dropped on the rocks alot  still works perfect apart form alot of scratches & €3.99 for 5o Chemical Lights is good value

The starlights are fine. The waders were useless. The other bits and pieces were ok for the money but the rods seemed a bit flimsy.

i met a guy on the beach one night and he was using the chemical lights. they were much brighter than the usual ones from the tackle shops but a bit smaller so good value even if you put 2 on.

as for the reels, i got given one a while back and used it as a spare. it landed my biggest Bass to date of over 8lbs. also had a good few doubles and the odd treble of doggies on it on ballycotton pier. plenty of strings of 6 macks too before it eventually grinded to a stop but for what it cost(probably (€10-€20) i got good value out of it.

i remember Cortaz posting about a white lure that came in one of the kits. he said it was a crackin Bass lure and caught him plenty of fish and he was gonna buy a load of the kits again just for the lure but they never got them back in.

i did buy the landing net but never used it and cant comment on the other stuff.

JP sums up my thoughts exactly, its for people who might fish once a year imo, its not for lads fishing once or twice a week. Thers much better buget gear out there.

starlights are excellent, got two boxes last year that ran out about a month ago, and ive been waiting for this sale to stock up again, the soft plastics are good value as you get 15 jig heads with them,i caught some great pollock with them.but the rods are lightweight, but fine for mack bashing or any light fishing.

It sadens me to think that these twigs could be recommended to new anglers, it would put them off angling for life

i don't think using rods or gear from lidl or any other cheap gear degrades or cheapens SAI one bit,i am sure most lads on the site started off with cheap rods and reels and a lot of them are still using them, the first rod and reel i bought for sea angling cost me 40 euro and that was 5 years ago and i am still using the reel made by inter sport to this day and never had any problem with it,i never washed it after a session or never gave it a drop of oil and it still going strong even pulled huss over 10 lbs with it

one good thing about the cheap gear is that it great for starting kids or even adults into fishing, where i work we often get tourist that would like to try the sea fishing and i give them the cheap rods and tell them a mark and let them off and i wont worry if they damage the rods, would be a different story if i gave them the century rods and they were damaged   i also write down this web site for them and tell them they can get all the information about fishing they need here

SAI is a serious angling site but it also has to encourage new anglers to the site, whether they use a €15.99 lidl rod or a €400 Zziplex , i started as a new angler on the site in 2008 and have gained a lot of great information from it

who knows maybe a future world champion from SAI will have started off fishing with a lidl rod from the link above
