Discussion re Survey on Bass Angling

#1 Post by MackDublin »

This is a really important survey.

Can the organisers post it onto 'The Lure Forum' website and the 'World Sea Fishing' website and also similar websites around Europe. The success of the survey will depend on the amount of people that fill it out. We know that Ireland attracts a huge amount of foreigners to it's shores to experience our Bass fishing. We need to get this survey in front of these people also.

Good luck and keep it going.

Hi Colm,

We have the stats for foreign anglers. Where there's been a vacumn is in the information about Irish anglers. This is what this survey is hoping to address.

the only people who'll profit from a re-opening of a commerical bass fisherie are those who'll be doing the trawling, and in a days fishing catch more than a thousand individual anglers in a month

but no doubt it won't last, before long, they'll overfish it and the bass will be so reduced that another ban for twenty years will need to be enforced

it does'nt take a genius to see how much more those anglers are contibuting to the economy and will continue to do so if the species is protected

good work with the survey

Irish Bass to Become Extinct- Another Example of the Irish Being the Whipping Boys of Europe.
Lets start at the very begining, HEADLINES:Ireland to join europe, So a little bit of information on the common fisheries policy, goes something like this..... members states can NOT fish in other members territorial waters, so before Ireland join the EU THEY CHANGE THAT RULE, SO MEMBERS CAN FISH IN OTHER MEMBERS WATERS( mainly Irish Box)... and in the years that follow they wipe 2 viable spieces off the radar( red mullet, herring) + possible others i can't remember at this time. So we want a government to listen to us now, hmm?, will the bass help the economy, perhaps, more than likley not.... best thing to do is if you catch a bass, get it stuffed and mounted(no jokes now), to show your grandchildren some day!!!

Lads what about the genuine Irish fishermen who have to put food on the table for there children..the Irish fishing industry is corrupt and Fianna Fail are invovled..how can it be justified that a couple of dozen fishermen in Donegal have 90 percent of a nations makeral quota..its irish fishermens birth right to fish for irish fish...we have to understand that these genuine men have a right to fish for bass as there counterparts in other European countries do..Lads dont blame the hard working genuine fishermen blame the millionaires and there greed..and Fianna Fail who have destroyed the industry ..we anglers must understand that genuine irish fishermen are strugling by the greed of a few and the bad management of our corrupt goverment..i wonder how many millionions the corrupt fishermen have given our poisonous politicians

ffs hfts, stop calling yourself an angler. 2 posts in 2 years on SAI, and 2 posts like that? I doubt if any of our members would swallow that line...

We'll have a lot more respect for you if you identify yourself as a commercial fisherman and engage as such with us on here.

And don't go trying to muddy the waters by dragging Salmon, Driftnets and Spanish into the debate on Bass. It's a seperate topic.

Ive no sympathy for trawler men, you reap what you sow, and if you want to be able to support your families by fishing practices will have to change, the sea doesnt belong to man we dont have a divine right to it, were just guests in it.

Whoa. Stop right there. On this site we are Recreational Sea Anglers. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who catches fish, by whatever means, and sell their catch is a Commercial Fisherman. And should be regarded and treated as such by whoever takes an interest in their activities.

If you have information on Bass being angled for commercially, then do your civic duty and report your information to the Authorities. But if you feel you can't/couldn't do that, then please pm anyone, anyone at all, on this site and share your information. I've no doubt whoever you pick at random will do the right thing.

ever hear of beef?? or chicken?? you can buy them cheaply in supermarkets all over the country and they taste good too! and because their farmed, their renewable. or why not try the Bass their netting anyway

why cant they fish for cod?? cos they killed it off! why cant they fish for other species? cos they've killed off most other fish worth catching. what are they gonna fish for in 6 months time when the Bass will be gone??
if their that hard up buy a cheap spinning rod and get a load of mackeral. that would feed the kids, just make sure you take all the bones out.

This is a disgraceful and unfounded comment. Either back it up with evidence or retract it.
Bass fishermen are extremely conservation minded and most Bass anglers I know practice 100% catch and release, never mind the 24hr, 2 fish limit.
Our campaign must be starting to have an effect if commercial operators are coming on here and posting rubbish like that above.

jesus lads as i said i only worked on trawlers for the past 2 years and i am also a very keen angler both shore and boat..lads as bigsod said we dont have a divine right to all the species in the sea so we must stop winging and crying and let these men who brave all weathers to bring back a very healthy food to our land to fish a sustainable fishery eg.bass as all other european fleets do...what i saw in the 2 years fishing on trawlers is that cod are very much abundant and speaking to the fishermen the reason there not coming inshore is pollution..much the same reason as the salmon i suppose..we land lovers really are the ones to blame for the destruction of the inshore fishing..why would fishermen destroy there future...again as Bigsod said we anglers dont have a divine right to the sea and we must also realize commercial fishermen have been on the sea from the beginning of time and theres still enough fish in the sea or everyone i saw it firsthand myself in the past 2 years...Lads we faught for the salmon and now what have we no fish in the rivers...and also less pollock..i wonder were the driftnet men keeping the seal population under control...i hear there now killing all the salmon and pollock..i think we anglers are barking up the wrong tree

Hi there HOME FROM THE SEA,
welcome to the site  .If you have been working on the trawlers for the past few years then you will have seeing the destruction that overfishing can do.Don't know if you are aware but down these parts despite LAWS in place regarding non commercial fishing for bass, certain TRAWLERMEN have been blatently igonring these laws for years,so how can you expect people to honestly believe that if the commercial sector is allowed to fish for bass again that the greedy boys won't cash in on the inshore stocks and wipe things clean for short term financial gain AGAIN.There's already so much illegal activity on the bass front going on,that it would be impossible to police this sector,so sorry i've no sympathy what so ever for commercial irish fisherman on the bass front, the long term gain to the economy from a sustainable bass stock is worth a lot more to the irish nation than a few big boys lining there pockets in the short term.
As regards the cod not coming inshore due to pollution don't make me laugh, this year alone myself and fellow anglers have seeing a huge increase in small codling on the south coast, many other species are starting to show up around the coast which are susceptable to pollution so water quality is obviously not that bad.
Regarding the salmon fishing, was there a form of financial compensation to these fishermen and now their looking to reap short term gains from a species that was nearly wiped out in the 1980's.That was in the day of local knowledge and experience now with all the technology out there these fish would'nt stand a chance.
Yes this is my hardcore view on this subject but it comes after many years of seeing first hand what illegal fishing and blatant disregard for legislation can do to fish stocks, how you may ask do i know such things, well put it this way ive a lot of relations who were involved in this trawler business years ago and told me of things that would make you cry  .

I dont think we should even be debating the issue with this guy. He obviously hasnt got a clue about the species or sustainability of fish stocks and is only trying to annoy people on the site and thwart OUR CAMPAIGN.

Dont be giving your senses for him as my mother says.

He has identified himself as a commercial fisherman and is supporting thier campaign.

I am all for freedom of speech but cmon mods tell him where to go. Anyone coming onto a forum for recreactional angling and argueing to allow commercials plunder and destroy our bass stocks needs to be moved on.
