whats available where you shop ?

lookin at the poll of what rods are popular , is it down to what your local shop stocks ? form what i think , not many shops in ireland stock zziplex but its the most popular ? i see alot of century and conoflex ,

nope, although i know 3 lads have a greys rod including myself, there not widely used, i use zziplex's and my brother does too. Actually a good few people i know around this way use zziplex rods

as far as i can see the shops dont stock what is in demand , rod wise anyway , i see alot of groups from many areas using what the shop stocks but not what lads want ?
alot of lads pay over the odds for postage on zziplex rods because thats what they want , ive done it myself .

I believe the cost of high end rods puts retailers off stocking them, average Joe soap dosn't care what rod he use's and as a result the shops stock cheap stuff. The clued in anglers know where to get what they want and usually price plays a big part in where they get them from! Hence the low demand for Zippys etc in tackle shop.

That said if there was a good selection in some tackle shop there would be queues to get in the door for a look!

we have seen alot of new faces get into casting and they all want and need rods reels and line etc for casting and not many lads have heard or seen the stuff we use, this gear is common all over the world in casting cicles anyway , so why cant we get in shops in ireland
and the shops that supply the gear all over the world sell normal fishing gear aswell , so no excusses that casting is a small market

I dont know any of the shops that sell zziplex.. but i guess thats the prestige of them also...
I was up at the Ulster casting club.. I think that everyone bar 2 people were using zziplex.

in the late 80s early 90s when match fishing was at its prime and casting was taking off we had mick dixon in ballybrack who stocked all you could ever need and was well in tune with the matchmen and casters because he was involved in it , i loved that shop and in a way he did alot for casting to because he got the gear we needed without any problems . then the start of viking tackle when gerry mahony set it up he to was into match fishing and casting and again had what you wanted ,
is match angling not as popular anymore ?
i know casting has taken a new kease of life !

I agree Andrew, whatever about match angling shops arnt geared up towards casting, but both Dennis and me have been talking to viking tackle and they tell me they are getting in bulk spools of sakuma night crystal in the diameters for the weight classes as well as .75 powerflex. It would be great to walk into a shop here and see the full range of ZZiplexs and other top end fishing and casting gear, and able to have a good look before buying blind as many people have to do when ordering them from the U.K. Such a shop would be an instand success im sure. Casting has taken a new lease of life, I think most peole felt it was very serious and maybe felt intimdated about going up and casting with the pros. But as we have discovered its a great day out, the banter is brilliant and the advice and encouragement are a great help for anyone wishing to improve their casting style and ultimatley their distance.

i'd have to side with keith on this one, price plays the most important factor. irish shops cant really compete with uk prices.

have to say its a pain to find anything to do with the casting side of our sport, in any tackle shop, ive had to buy all my gear online from the uk, only because its unavailable here

I have to order all my fishing gear from outside of galway, the shops dont even have shockleader now!

i see alot of shops packed full of crap that never sells , that takes up space and money where the latest gear could fit in
how many lads are sick of walking into a shop only to see the same old crap thats been there for years ,
the tackle shops deffinatley need a new lease of life ,
out with the old and in with the new , there is the money still about to buy good tackle , just look at a sci meet

personaly speaking i worked in dunlaoghaire angling a for the last 2 summers , and i often asked my boss why he didnt sell the higher end gear? simply speaking it was too expensive to sell, we were able to buy it off our wholesalers for only a fraction more than i could get it from the likes of veals. the cheaper stuff is where the money is, its got a higher turn over rate than the higher stuff, cheaper to buy in and is therefore more appealing, theres more average joe bloggses out there than there is top anglers and casters. holiday and summer fishing is where the profits are had, cant expect tackle shops to more effort inwheeling and dealing higher end gear when they can sell pack of feathers and contenders all year long hassle free.

line? i havr no probems sourcing line. does anyone else? courtown angling centre and viking both stock, grauvell, seaguar, trilene, ultima , suffix. everything esle is readiy availibe be it hooks, eads, rig bits etc... i think the shops are fairly wel stocked up. once again its over priced when compared to the uk. maybe we could get our idiotic government to lower the vat and encourage spending?

i have no problems sourcing line i get it no problems from the uk , can never seem to walk into a shop and pick up what i want just like bearings for my reels , long tails for my weights , packets od 100 oval split rings , rings for my rods , etc
