Donaghadee, Co Down, Reports - Latest 17/12/06

#1 Post by Drew »

Well lads, its arrived, the time of year where K2 Realises that fishing is great! I mean, If I have to get all annoyed cos the fishing is cack between Feb-Apr so be it, For the fish have returned to Donaghadee!!!

In fact, it was so good, I went for 2 seperate sessions yesterday.

Session 1:

People: Me, Myself, I, and yer man K2.

Duration: 10am - 1.30ppm

Tide: Looked like last hour+1/2 of the Flood and the rest down.

Weather: Gorgeously Sunny/Showers

Bait: Ragworm

Rigs: 3 Hook Scratcher, Size 1s, 50lb Trace, 15lb Clear Snoods./Dennetts Rig 66 (Accounted for the Pollack and 2 Coalies).

Results: 18 Coalies to 2.5lbs, 4 Ballan Wrasse to 0.5lbs, and 6 Sprick Pollack.

Report:
A Fine day greeted the intrepid K2 (and his raging hangover), as I walked down the Busy Pier at Donaghadee, High powered ribs sped eagerly in and out of the Harbour while the Lifeboat cruised by on its drills, I had 3/4lb of Rag left from yesterday so had decided that the day was too good to miss, setting up in my favourite spot on the railings, I set up my abu6500/Aeriel Uptide Combo, with 3oz of lead, and a 3 Hook Scratcher Rig, I found one King Rag was about the right size for 3 Baits.

A Gentle underarm Lob into a certain Rough area I know was next, then the line was taught, and the trap was set... I didnt have to wait long for the first bite, and after 2 minutes the Rod was happily bouncing away with the tell tail signs of Coalfish, I concentrated my efforts on that part of the pier for the entire session, and was pleased to see the fish coming in at very regular intervals, with a couple of wrasse to boot! One of the bites in particular was an absolute stonker, Lifted the Butt off the ground! turned out to only be a Coaly of a couple of Pounds, But still, that fish was going Ballistic! Absolutelty great fun, Reminds you why you go fishing.

Session 2:

People: Me, and the amazing Dogfish Dave.

Duration: 7pm - 9.30pm

Tide: 2 hours of the Flood

Weather: It was, ummmm, Wet!

Bait: Ragworm

Rigs: 3 Hook Scratchers, Dennetts Rig 66

Results: 20 Coalies, 1 Wrasse.

Report: It was raining, I didnt care, I was straight back down the pier, I'd used all the Rag during the morning, so I was punching out Rig 66 to the Horizon with the K2, Coalies were hitting them readily, sometimes 2-3 at a time, meanwhile Dave Arrived, and Proceeded to quickly bag a Ballan, a lot of Rain, and a Brave few fish later, It was time to go, I was so wet I looked like I'd fallen in, But it didnt matter, the fish were back :D :D

Mate, its a small 5 Hook Flasher mackeral trace, an Elite Few, Myself included, swear by these cheap lures, They're the ultimate Bait Collecter, Its not actually listed as Rig 66 anymore, they changed the number, I think its Dennetts Rig R132 now... But all the same, you cant beat them, so don't try, lol.

There was 1 in Particular, Seemed to have a bit of an attitude Problem, But you learn to deal with these things...

Its amazing what a bit of patience can do, One of that lot was seriously eager to learn, had been to T & T and got himself Ragworm after seeing me catching on it last week, He had even tied up a few Rigs, Crude as they were they worked and he got a few fish, He was the Envy of the Feather throwers.. Good lad too.

I buy mine in the Shop on Friday, when its just in the door, usually all used by Monday night, I tend to buy a pound + 1/2 cos I regularly head on 3 trips per week... I get Grumpy otherwise.

Naw I mean if you didn't use them all - how long would they stay alive for? What's the best way to keep them. My local tackle shop is the same - gets rag in on a friday evening. Only thing is sometimes I be working over the weekend and might not get fishing til the tues or wed. Would they keep that long?

You'll need plenty of that insulation stuff they come in, fire them in a large maggot Box and keep them somewhere cold and dark, Probably your fridge if you can risk it  Should keep 'em alive...
