Kilmore Sunday 21st.

#1 Post by Stephen8wood »

People:Me, Richard aka Beebub 2, Marco, Ciaran, David, Frank and Peter

Duration:11 am to 4 pm

Tide: a bit of each

Weather: flat calm, cold and sunny

Bait: Mac and Lug

Rigs:Lots and lots of rigs

Results: 2 Codling, one big Ballan, 12 small to medium Coalies and a handful of small pollock

Report: Dick Hayes took us out on what can only be described as a beautiful day for the time of year. The sea was the calmest I've ever known it to be and even the sun came out. The problem was the lack of fish. Dick did his best and moved us around quite a bit but they just weren't biting.

There were a few fish there because on the first drop Frank foul hooked a small codling. Richard did the same ten minutes later.

After that it got even slower. The odd pollock was caught every 40 minutes or so and then Richard got a fine Ballan Wrasse. He may have a photo.

In the end Dick moved us to a spot where he knew there would be a few coalies and true to his word about 12 were taken. For the first time in my life I blanked on a boat! It didn't matter as it was a beautiful day and great to be out.

I'm a little surprised at the general lack of fish. We didn't have any whiting, Gurnerd or legally hooked codling. I think I remember reading somewhere that settled weather coupled with a slack tide put the fish to sleep, so to speak. I really hope the Trawlers haven't just finished off the last of them. :(

iv been fishing kilmore for a number of years and the stocks are dropping .iv also found the skippers are trying there best to just touch off the fish.i think they have too.the days of been able to slaughter cod on a charter is over .once you hit a shoal they dont try and follow like they used to .they drift off it then move to a different spot and try for somthing else
we cant blame them its there livihood after all.

One Codling was legally caught. See below. It was a beautiful day. Shame about the fish overall. But a personal tally of 10 wasn't too bad. Ballen Wrasse (1) Codling (1) Coalie (4) Pollock (4).

You would probably have hit a few more fish had you brought Ragworm with you mate. Its a killer down there.

I seem to remember a report over the last couple of months from Kilmore. Great results reported by gilling soft plastics. Whenever I get out I usually end up with loads of leftover bait so the plastics might be a good option.
