Report: Dick Hayes took us out on what can only be described as a beautiful day for the time of year. The sea was the calmest I've ever known it to be and even the sun came out. The problem was the lack of fish. Dick did his best and moved us around quite a bit but they just weren't biting.
There were a few fish there because on the first drop Frank foul hooked a small codling. Richard did the same ten minutes later.
After that it got even slower. The odd pollock was caught every 40 minutes or so and then Richard got a fine Ballan Wrasse. He may have a photo.
In the end Dick moved us to a spot where he knew there would be a few coalies and true to his word about 12 were taken. For the first time in my life I blanked on a boat! It didn't matter as it was a beautiful day and great to be out.
I'm a little surprised at the general lack of fish. We didn't have any whiting, Gurnerd or legally hooked codling. I think I remember reading somewhere that settled weather coupled with a slack tide put the fish to sleep, so to speak. I really hope the Trawlers haven't just finished off the last of them.
