Rotten Bottom Rigs
Anybody know how to tie these rigs? Are they any use? I was thinking of fishing a really snaggy spot and was hoping to keep tackle losses to a minimum.

Re: Rotten Bottom Rigs
ye i find them a must when fishing rough ground, not always a guranteed method of getting your gear back but nine times out of ten its the lead thats caught an this will give you a good chance of freeing your rig even if you loose the lead... They're best used with a pulley rig and my personal favourite are the Breakaway Escape Link i find them great , the instructions are on the back of the packet and are simple to use. This specific type dont need a light line link to the lead as they operate on the pressure the lead link is set which is handy although i attach a link of about 10lb breaking strain just to give me a better chance of recovering my lead. But definitly worth trying over rough ground as it could save you alot of rigs and fish ....

Hi
Try the link below:
http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/rotte ... m-rigs.php
They are a simple rig to set up but highly effective to minimise tackle loss. 90% of the time you will come back with no weight but your hook and trace still on- and hopefully a juicy fish. Do not be using you best weights or even weights you have paid for on this rig. We use round steel bar from my mates work which he ""borrows""
. Therefore it does not cost anything when it is lost to davy jones locker. As sea serpant said they do help on a dirty and kelpy bottom.

it would also be worth a trip to your local car breakers yard, gather up a load of wheel studs and even spark plugs to use as weights, its better than loseing your leads

Re: Rotten Bottom Rigs
if you are fishing kelpy ground using a hook that will bend out under pressure will save you alot of bother too ,lead lifts are a godsent aswell ,using a gripper lead will stop your lead rolling about and ending up in a crevice ,after you cast out leave the lead to settle on its own for a second dont wind down to set it, as thats just gonna get you snagged before you even get a sniff of a fish escape links are good but dont forget to reset the plastic disc every time you reel in or you are in for a big suprise
biggest birdsnest of my fishing career and one 5 oz gripper let loose on its own not heading towards the sea

Re: Rotten Bottom Rigs
I use two gemini links(the ones with the clip for bait)) Back to back and 5" of 12lb mono to an oval split ring which in turn connects to the lead. When casting just put the split ring on the bait clip, it releases every time.If your using impact leads there is no need for a split ring the loop on the lead fits in the bait clip, but youd want to be feeling realy rich to be using them in rough ground
