Reel Cleaning

#1 Post by crazyfish1983 »

Hi all
A quick but strange one. I am just back from a beach session and my reel is a little bit odd. Its an okuma (not sure of the exact model). Must be a bit sandy inside- would it be te end of my reel if I put it in the dish washer at a lw temp?

Thanks for the advice- and no im not insane.

Fixed spool?

A run in a dish washer might push water into areas where it will lodge and cause some rust. A run under a luke warm tap would be a better bet.

What exactly is the problem?

Hi Kev

Yeah it is a fixed spool. I think it has got some sand in the gears of the reel. I soaked it in hot soapy water and when I drained the sink there was sand in left over. It is a lot stiffer to wind in than what it ued to be and a lot less smooth (and a bit gritty on the retrieve).

Thanks for getting back to me kev. Dont know what to do with it. It was a great reel before all this!! :!: :!: :!:

hi man, just spotted your post. they are easily enough to take apart. you might get away with just having to take ths side caseing off to expost the inner workings of the reel. best bet is to flush it out with wd40 as this is a great penetrating oil. it's what i do with all out FS reels before giving them a drop of plain old 3 in 1 oil. our okuma eclipse EZ-90 reels are still going strong 4 years down the line with this 6 month MOT treatment   . hope this helps man.

Hi Al

That is something i havent done- operated on my reel. Im am just afraid that when I do it will be the end of it... lol. I soaked it is warm ater last nite and dried it out well. I will check this evening and will take the side casing off and load it up with WD.

Thanks for the advice.

I'd agree with al and jordan on this one. I haven't a clue about any inner workings of reels or anything like that but i was having problems with and old one and took it apart, cleaned it down with warm soapy water and a cotton stick, dried it well, greased any moving parts and it all went back together pretty easily. I haven't had a problem with it since.

just take your time when taking apart.

Make sure you are working on a decent size table. When you start taking parts off the reel put them in a line so you know the order in which them came off. This will help you put them back together again. Once you can get at the gears, you can get some WD40 in there.

As mentioned, see if there is some screws in the side case. This will give you the access you are looking for.

If you can pop the bearings out as well it would be worth soaking them in white spirits and then re-oiling them with some 3in1 oil.

I like to use engine degreaser sprays to clean the crap out of my reels mate. You can use the red tube like you get on cans of WD40 to flush the crap out of bearings too. Clean everything after using this and re oil / grease the parts and pop them back in. Works a treat and have never had a problem afterwords.

Put down a very slightly dampish teatowel and lay everything out on that. Stops fiddly little bits from slipping/sliding all over the place.
