I am just about to head away for the weekend to Donegal (dunfanaghy) we are staying close to the main beach. Could any one offer a heads up weather or not this beach is worth a throw and what tactics are best?
Also if anyone could offer advice on how to conceal two 13 ft beach rods, a tripod and all my gear please do so.
Thanks for any advice on the beach or any other in close proximitey. If needs be drop me a pm.
Hi I've never fished that beach myself but I have fished the pier at portnablagh, quite snaggy in places but does produce shore and 3 bearded rockling, coalfish and the odd congor
Another pier not too far away down at ards friary can sometimes be worth a throw too
Danger of sea trout over to the left near the bar mouth, flounders over to the right. Mullet in season further in in the channel into Horn Head Bridge. Dig lug at low tide out from Dunfanaghy Pier.
Dunno how you'll go about explaining away the gear!
We have a house on the Pier Road so I have fished down there a fair few times. The pier itself is very snaggy but does have a healthy population of 3 bearded rockling (seems to be all I catch!!) amongst other things. Night fishing is best but you'll pick up the odd mackerel and pollock using lures during the summer. The rocks are a bit better for the lure fishing, just make sure you are mobile and move around to find the fish. Rubber eels are great for pollock and you'll also get them on silver sandeels/german sprat which will also take mack when you get a shoal coming in.
I'm absolutely dying to give Killahoey a go, it looks like it could produce some great flatfish and also sea trout at the estuary end. Can anyone give me some tips on where to fish, how far out, tides, bait etc... ?

Thanks scrob. Im not sure which beach is which down there. I was staying close to the main beach which is pretty much on the golf course (looking out at the pier). When we were on our way home we fond another beach (at the foot of the shandon hotel - what a beach). Needless to say I am busting to fish this- it is beautiful! Have you fished this one- or is this the one you want to fish??
Funny I have never had much anticipation to fish Marble Hill but now that you mention it, it has been added to my list It is a lovely beach and great for bathing/watersports in the summer, I guess I never gave it much thought for the fishing.
Tanglerat - any tips on Killahoey for me?

Why don't you try and get her to go fishing with you and then you wouldn't have to worry about hiding the gear? She might like it and it's always someone else to help you carry the gear when you get there!

Kerry- my beloved has a fobia of live fish so i suppose it wouldn't hurt to bring her a long given my catch ratio's as of late.... . She would go fly fishing on summer nights with me to chill out but that is as far as I can talk her into going.
should be some flounder about those beaches and maybe an odd bass, use smallish hooks size 2 with lugworm or ragworm tipped of with makerel.sandeels and razor fish may also be useful or a combanation of baits [cocktail].

If she has a fobia of live fish then no wonder she doesn't go with you fishing.
There's not many of us about - women who love to go fishing.
