python ragworm

#1 Post by spindlefist »

While down near Bull Island the other day, I noticed next to a rock the side of a fat ragworm, I moved some seaweed, and saw this beast, it was just sittin there relaxing
was tempted to use it as bait, but as I was finishing up, and I felt it a shame to waste such a prime Ragworm when the fish weren;t even biting, so I just took his pic and sent him on his way... it stretched out to over 65cm , but everytime I let go of tail to take pic it would recoil a bit, but even so, ya can see it at 61cm..... big big worm....

Hi Daire,

I've often dug rag that size around that area, some real beasts, thicker than my thumb - and I have thick thumbs

Funnily enough though, the bigger ones dont seem as agressive as the 8" worms.

They make a great bait float fishing for pollock and wrasse, I simply cut each worm into 3-4 inch strips and put on a 1/0 or 2/0 hook - plenty of scent/blood coming out of it and lots of movement. I start cutting at the tail and work my way up towards the head as needed, that way the worm stays alive longer.

Economical digging aswell, as it means half a dozen worms will do you for a 4 hour session

Amazing yokes all right. Came across one at the back of Killala pier last year and assumed it had crawled out of the crap the trawler boys dump there. Do they occur in colonies or what?

Where I dig for them, they do tend to be around in reasonable numbers - I would usually get around 25-40 huge worms and maybe 25-40 smaller worms in say an hours digging, but lasy year was very poor.

Them big 'uns also make a good bass and smoothie bait if you put 'em on a pair of 5/0's pennel rig
