Who said you cannot get macks in JANUARY
People:seirt, eddie, myself
Duration:6 hours
Tide:full to low
Weather:FOG
Bait:crab, lug, mack, mussel, rag
Rigs:hokkias, devil rigs, shrimp rigs, sabbikis,
Results:10 species, Codling, ling pollock, whiting, poor cod, pouting, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, Herring, Mackeral, SCAD!!!
Report:
Well, arrived nice and early on a foggy and cold morning at dunmore east for the first trip of 2010, launched the boat to a nice swell running in from the s/w west, but little wind.
visibility was about 500 meters so we cautiously set of for the 3 mile rock, east of hook head.
As we got further offshore the vis improved a little, but it was still cold and damp, and now with a nice f3 northerly to keep us warm.
Started with general drifts around the rough ground in the hope of picking up some codling, got most everything else except codling, with a few nice ballens coming onboard and a smattering of other stuff, like ling and pouting.
Moved off the reef and we picked up a few small codling. Decided to head out to a wreck, where we might pick up some decent pollock, but as with many fishing trips, we never got there for a while.
En-route, i noticed a rather large paint came up on the fish finder !!!! Hmmm, thats not a wreck, too big, on with the sabikis, and up comes a full house of lovely herring !
Seirt and eddie soon joined in with full houses and we followed the shoal for a while, and to our amazment, up comes joey mackerel, and then larger mackerel in twos and threes!!!! IN JANUARY
At this point eddie made a stupid comment on the boat, " i suppose jam jar rayner will pick up a scad, ha ha , " A picture paints a thousand words !!!!  , yes on the next drop up comes a lovely little scad, IN JANUARY with the water temp at 7.2 deg C
So all those global warming theorys, bring them on, prehaps, tuna next !!
A great day, considering the bone chilling fog, we did get to the wreck, and pulled a few fish of it, but nothing large, headed home, and tried for the cod again, but no luck , so a good day.
regards

Re: Who said you cannot get macks in JANUARY
Nice fishing Martyn, not all that unusual certainly in my neck of the woods, We had Scad in cork harbour up till the end of nov, with one guy getting 3 specimans including one fish of 2.5 lbs who, when we told him that it was a record, threw it back thinking we were taking the piss
(same day we also caught a pup tope in the harbour!!!)
The only month of the year that I have not caught mackrel in the Cork area is March, and we quiet often get belters right up to the end of feb, then they vanish in march, and mid apil you can get lots again, roll on global warming..

Well Done Guys!
Jaysus Ed if the hat is lucky you'll have to wear it all summer! The youngster has some sense of humour already
Was out around the lings myself today. Some pollack.. haddock..whiting..ling and some small stuff...cod thin on the ground. There was a few other boats around, all were having it tough. Lovely day on the water though
