what because its not a dab or a codling? double standards me thinks. a fish is a fish an if it is to be consumed then it must be killed. it make no ends as to what species it is, if they want to eat it and they've caught it they are entitled to kill it in a human manner. putting a knife through its brain seems pretty humane and painless to me. personaly tope and smoothies are a fish that i have a lot of respect for and as a result i woudnt kill one for no matter what reason, thats a personal preference. who am i to say if they're wrong or right

for those that still think its disgusting to kill a fish in this manner consider the fish on your table that were dragged up from the depths in a net only to be thrown onto a rusty deck and left to suffocate until they died or made it to the spot where the trawer men gut them alive.

Re: Shore caught tope video
I haven't seen the video yet (blocked in work
)
I'm 100% with eric on this one if the fish was to be eaten, then fair enough. You can see a video how to fillet tope of a popular website, so they must be considered prime eating for some. I personally think all fish should be 100% C&R before the pup or drop their eggs, but consider that Trawler fishing for Cod is at is best when they shoal up to breed (Feb I think) now that's disguisting and IMO the reason why there is no cod to speak off in this country.
Double standards me thinks lads, if you are involved in sea fishing you are involved in the killing of some fish, even if your 100% C&R, there is a mortality rate for released fish. At least this fish was of a decent size and had the chance to breed and contribute to the species many times before it was on the Table, something we can't say for 40cm Bass.

Re: Shore caught tope video
I AGREE WITH ALL THE LADS THAT VIDEO IS SICK...ID GIVE ANYTHING TO CATCH A TOPE OF THAT SIZE AND ID ENJOY TAKING A QUICK PHOTO AND PUTTING IT BACK EVEN MORE. ITS SUCH A SHAME TO SEE PEOPLE IN THIS DAY AND AGE SO UNEDUCATED ABOUT FISH CONSERVATION AND STOCKS I HAD MY AWAKENING SOON AFTER I HANDED AND KILLED MY PERSONAL BEST BASS OF 12LB ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO. I WAS ONLY A YOUNG TEENAGER AND IT WAS THE 1ST BASS I HAD EVER CAUGHT SO I GOT A BIT CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT BUT WITH AGE AND INFO ABOUT STOCKS AND SPECIES I HAVE REALISED HOW IMPORTANT RETURNING BREEDING FISH LIKE THAT IS TO THE FUTURE OF OUR SPORT.I WILL FOREVER REGRET KILLING THAT FINE FISH AND THESE DAYS I OPT TO RETURNING EVERYTHIN I CATCH TAKING PHOTOS OF THE DECENT ONES CAUSE AFTER ALL IT IS A SPORT NOT A "BLOODSPORT"....

Why,
All commerical line caught Tuna are killed by a knife through the head. I personally have used this practice on ling before as I consider it best for the fish. There is nothing worse that seeing a fish fliping around a beach, peir or deck, dying a very slow death.
Do you insult all summer mackie bashers in the same manner as above

It would be nice if some of this venom was saved for the commericial lobby that are looking to target Bass again and are doing their best to make most atlantic species extinct. It's easy to have an annomous pop in a forum. Get your pen out and write to some of eejits in charge, ask your friends and family to do the same & maybe it will help make a difference.

Caps is considered shouting on internet forums.... apart from that, it is very hard to read. Use caps foa a single word to enphise it... not a full paragraph as people just wont read it.

Re: Shore caught tope video
what a waste, you could see it was a heavily pregnant female.
trying to make excuses for this sort of action is idiotic, you should all know better.
by catch, fish which my die by mistake is alot different than shoving a knife in its head.
do you really think they ate the fish, i very much doubt it.

i killed several bass last year in aprill full of roe, does that make me an idiot? (roe tastes lovely spread on a piece of toast) i coud only imagine deep fried tope pups is savage. im going to raise this point again because i feel its very poignant. would you rather see a shark such as a tope caught by an angler on rod and line, killed humanely and brought home to feed his famiy? or a commercial operated boat catching numbers of tope, de-finning them and throwing the bodies back over board so a crazy chinese person can feel he's getting the appropriate medicine for his cold. tope is sold as rock salmon, as is smoothie, spurdog, huss, dogfish etc.... its very popular on the continent, very popular. so i have no doubt it was consumed. as i previously mentioned just because the irish don't eat them doesnt mean other peope dont.
consider a deer, in may ways its similar to a tope. its big, theres plenty of them, there nice to look at and they both taste good. i bet most of you would have no problem tucking into a piece of venison and wouldnt think twice about the fact it had to be killed to provide this steak. your so self righteous is sickens me, get over yourselves and stop being hypocrites.

Re: Shore caught tope video
All the lamb chops that you all have consumed over the years, well they just come wrapped in cling film in a little container from the supermarket dont they?? Nothing at all to do with the little lamb being brought into a slaughter house and killed with a bolt to the head. Knife - Bolt, the Thai's would say Same Same but Different. Shark is eaten in many country's, you all need to get over yourselves. It would be a different story if the Tope were in short supply and the guy had 10 of them lined up dead on the beach, very similar pictures have been posted of codling on this site in the last month and I notice they didnt elicit the same response out of you all, gasps of "stop the slaughter", "think of the poor fish!!" Its got nothing to do with condoning it because there's nothing to condone, the guy is out fishing and taking fish for his table!! The double standards out of some you are hilarious!!! You cant kill one but you can kill as many as you want of another???, tell me the last time any of you released a 5 pound Cod?? I think there's a few of you that need to maybe go and sign up for a that organisation beginning with P membership. Youre all Anglers and therefore wether you like it or not you're involved in killing fish and not alone fish, what about all the bait you kill and use while in the pursuit of fish??? Now if there are any vegetarian anglers amongst us who have never inadvertently killed a single fish while self righteously practicing catch and release and who use nothing but vegetable based products to catch their fish before they carefully release them then by all means pipe up, get your 2 cents worth in and tell us all what horrible people we and they are for killing fish for the table and using live creatures to use as bait in order to do the killing.
Ah yes, 1974, The Cod Wars. I hated Cod so of course I signed up straight away.

i dont see a problem with this behaviour the fish was killed quick and was destined for the pot thats nothing compared to the antics of the mack bashers here during the summer.

Re: Shore caught tope video
being honest eric,if you knew the bass were full of roe and killed them you are an idiot, thats just like what the eastern europeans were and still are doing in the canals and rivers and all sea fish etc even though coarse fish are protected and stocked up for coarse anglers its just f****ng common courtesty and respect,so you dont see nothing wrong with killing a pregnant female tope?they could have easily left the last bit out were the tope is being dragged up the beach and then stabbed in the head.in my eyes there criminals and should get the chair
thats just my two cent.

Re: Shore caught tope video
i think i agree with both arguements
there are two tope there,i've no problems with them taking the smaller fish for the table,no harm in that, but that bigger fish is very heavily pregnant and should have been released stright away.that would have been the decent thing to do,and the kids would have learnt a valuable lesson in conservation.
