Dont mind jimmy casting weight is stated as being up to 9oz which is more than adequete, the heaviest ive ever used is 7oz.Not familiar with this set up but the price is very good for a starter set, you can always upgrade to a better rod and reel as your fishing progresses.

Hello there privatepile to be brutally honest i would recommend a slightly better set up than the rod and reel you have in mind, either a second hand rod for that price or spend DOUBLE the price you have in mind you wouldn believe the jump in quality for 140euro,the penn surfmaster is a great reel for the price and any daiwa or shimano rod would be perfect.your best bet is to go into a tackle shop and ask them for a look at rods and reels for 10euro over your price range and then whatever rod and reel you prefer then shop around for the best price,at least then you know what the rod and reel are like especially if you buy on the net.but at least if you end up going to a tackle shop to buy the rod you can ask them to knock the ten euro off the rod and reel then that will bring you back to your budget(140/70 euro). :D :D

Thanks for the reply mark.

Unfortunately €70/80 would be about my limit. In a few months i plan on buying a more expensive rod/reel but for the moment its 70/80

Its a wonder how people managed to catch fish in the days before you could afford to spend multiple hundreds of euros on gear  Oh when I think of my grandad catching more species than I could dream off with some sort of an aul rod off the side of a dingy.

That rod and reel will catch you lots of fish- probably not at the moment if you enjoy your health! There's no need to spend the sun, moon and stars on gear. The fish don't give a fiddlers about what rod your using.

That will be a grand set up to start with,as they say you have to start somewhere and your starting in the right place.
there is no point in spending a fortune on rods and reel's only to discover you might not like fishing afterall

good luck, tight lines and welcome.

as john1 said..

no point spendin a fortune to get you started.. like the rest of them i started off with a very basic setup (inherited from my mother who decided sea fishing wasnt for her), used that same set up for over 20yrs, caught plenty of good fish on it too.. and considering my first fish was a 15lbs cod off the north sea i cant complain..

so go get the gear you need to start off, and never mind what people say, they may even laugh, but when you start catching more fish than they do.. the look on their face is priceless ( have experience in this... )
then in a couple of years, or when you have more money at had to buy an upgrade, then ask again for what peoples opinions are..

be sure to post up your report of the first session.. and good luck

John 1 is right, find out whether you enjoy fishing before spending more money. Also what puts off most beginners is not catching fish the first few times they go out. Talk to some of the lads in your area, find out where is fishing, what height of tide is good, what time in the tide to fish and what bait to use. I know a lad who bought a brand new sandstorm, only to sell it a few weeks later at a loss of €70
