Keeping Hands Warm––Any Tips?

#1 Post by lodore »

Hi All,

Does anyone have any good advice as to how to keep your hands warm in the current freezing weather? I bought a pair of neoprene gloves, but to he honest they're not great; and when I peel back the fingers to bait up (with usually freezing bait) any heat they retain seems to vanish. I've had to cut a few trips short on account of severely freezing hands recently, which is always a pity when you've gone to trouble of getting bait and setting up.

So, are there any tips, tricks or equipment that might be good for keeping everything toastie in the cold?

Cheers,
Lodore

theres hand warmers you can get, been using them myself lately. there like a sachet that u shake to activate and stay warm for hours. ive found them in outdoor shops, golf shops and the odd chemist. about a euro each and just stick them under the gloves, hope this helps

This is going to sound mental, but if you want warm pinkies try putting 2 lumps of polystyrene in your pockets
and just hold them when your waiting for a bite.
when night fishing try putting 2 rocks on top of your lamp (not for too long) then put that in your pocket.

try putting on a pair of surgical gloves under your neoprene gloves. most of the heat your hands loose is from water, bait juices etc causing heat to more quickly evaporate away. the latex gloves will not only stop your hands from getting wet, but they also act as an air tight barrier that will not let heat escape in the first place   . i get my ones from the hardware shop, 10 pairs for £1. also great for digging bait in cold weather too :P not only will your hands stay warm, but clean too  hopes this helps man.

There's some great tips here lads; thanks to all of ye for them. Think I'll definitely pick up some of those hand warmers, but I'm intrigued by the polystyrene and 'hot rocks' ideas. Of course, the most natural suggestion is to light the fire ... I'll have that fire log on the beach yet :)

Love the surgical gloves idea from Al and Jordan though: it makes sense on a lot of levels, and is nice and cheap too! Also saves getting the nail brush out to get off the stink of fish.

Keep 'em coming ...

Personally I have these bad boys to hand.

Image

They are great to leave in your pockets so you can dip your hands in while standing about. I also rob a tea towel on the misses for each session. If you keep your hands dry that's half the battle. I don't use the gloves at all. Even neoprenes will hold water and that just draws the heat out of your fingers. Nothing worse then ending a session because of the cold.

Fire logs are a life saver too.Last year i was fishing the shannon eastury with tony and boycie, We lit a firelog and started fishing the last two hours of the drop or so we thought, after half an hour the fire was engulfed by the sea and we had made a hasty retreat to the van, a week after i got an op on my knee  .
