i bet you were on the south pier dave,
for years as a kid i've seen a small boat head out to the back of the north pier every night
to check his net! it even had bouys/floats on each end! all visible to everyone!
he never landed his fish when he came into the harbour,he would hide them on the boat as small as it was! he came back later (very am!).
you could set your watch by the sound of his outboard coming down the mouth of the river!
15/20 min and he was out and in again.
that was 25 years ago, don't know how it is now but i reckon somethings are the same!
species 2009, whiting :(, three beard rockling,.shore rockling, 5 beard rockling, flounder, lesser spotted dogfish,bullhuss, dab,bass(13), more whiting : pollock,poorcod,pouting, sea trout(the dodder!)brown trout,sea scorpion,mackerel, silver eel,
topknot:), cod, conger, corkwing wrasse, smooth hound.

Had the similar story last year. Happened on the North Pier. Was fishin there, 2 blokes came, pulled the box. They asked, want to fish beside me. I agreed, so they kicked the box, tied a rope and relased the net with the Avoca current. On my quest what it is for, they said, they tryin to catch a herring

This has come up a couple of times in the past and the local anglers say they are herring fishing. Nothing illegal.
