Did i mess up?

#1 Post by Boris »

I was fishing off wicklow pier close to the edge, when i felt a bite, i could get a few winds of the reel then nothing, felt like i was snagged and no pulling would dislodge it. But if i left the rod slightly slack everyso often there would be small tapps on the rod tip, after a few mins of tryin the line would snap or i cut it. this happened a few times.

So did i cut off some fish?

Sounds like you had a fish and got snagged. Sometimes a hooked fish will duck for cover and you line, weight or hook will get caught up in weed or rocks. There has been at times lobster pots along the pier there and there are also plenty of snaggy bits too.

there is the odd conger along there too, if you were using fish bait or had a small fish on it might have had a go at it.

a boat rod and reel with 80 lb line  lobster and crabs can give you a head wrecking session i,ve often got snagged and pulled for a break and ended up with a big lobster claw on one of my hooks ,fishing near snags and rough ground your always gonna get snagged 30 lb main line and hooks that will bend out will help
