Sheltering on beaches...

#1 Post by spindlefist »

So I've been browsing all the online sites, looking at beach shelters, even the Ron Thompson deal on the cover of Sea Angler, but it is still looking about 85euro for a shelter, and I've had fishing umbrelllas, but they just don;t give you the best shelter in middle of winter...anyone any other suggestions?
Has anyone ever tried one of those pop up tents, ya know the ones, - up in 2 secs..... fill em with rocks and gear so as to not blow away....

?

cheers...

i would say stay away from pop up things in 2 seconds
you wont be dissapointed with a RT Beach Shelter and fairly handy to put up, with a bit of practice you will be sheltered in about 5 minutes or less

The pop up shelters will fold on top of themselves in any wind at all. They are also not tall enough to sit in unless you are sitting on the ground sheet, which would be uncomfortabel from a fishing point of view . Try get yourself a Ron Thompson if at all possible.

Im with paddy on this one they are great and miles ahead of the ron thompson imo.

Eric the igloo is easier to store because it dont have that horrable bend in the top of it so for the car its more practical.

the igloo is both bigger and stronger than the "do ron ron", and you can also get them with Zziplex on the side

I was given the prototype 3 months ago , they are without doubt the best shelter i have ever used.
I recently put it up in a force 8 north easterly by myself !
Tons of room.
No rain splashing back in your face as you fish.
100% Wind & Rain proof.
One thing i did find was the stronger the wind the lower they should be set to the beach.

as i preiviously stated the igloo looks very good, it does lack that hockey stick bend that the ron thompson has, has a few nice touches like the velcro strap for you rod (however this would be a travesty if erected in storm force wind if it suddenly decided to fly fly fly away, which i have seen the ron thompson do a couple of times) and doesnt have that irratating hood which either makes you sit on the sand or crouch in some back braking position for hours on end to see your rod tips.

in credit to the ron thompson, ive had the same one for the last 6 odd years. i remember the day i got, like a little kid at christmas i had it set up in the living room in no time and marvelled at the greatest invention to hit an angler in the face since sliced bread. throughout her six years of service she has not once let me down. through hurricane force winds to insane downpours to scorching hot sunny days she goes about her job in a quite and thankless manner. eved in the stongest of winds ive always managed to get here up, running and sitting tight by myself.

both items seem equally as easy to set up so as far as im concered, one small tip in favour of the godlsy is its carry bag; the three velcro straps (or something of that description). the ron thompson can be a slight pain in the arse when trying to get her to fit into her sleeping bag, but its easy enough to aquire a few straps to get the same effect.

while if buying a new beach buddy and i had the cash, i would most certainly go for the goldsy due to its small advantages. i really find as far as value for money goes the ron thompson is impossible to beat. their the most widley used beach buddy for a very good reason, i'd say 90% of irish beach buddy owners (now theres a minnority) own and use a ron thompson. personaly the godlsy doesnt offer enough for me to decided to throw out my my shelter and spend 130 odd euro (from veals) on a new one, i'd say the vast majority of people in the same position share my sentiments.

for value for money ya cant beat ron thompson :D and they come in a range of colours, that vital!
