sea fishing for salmon

#1 Post by dan »

has anyone ever caught a salmon whilst sea fishing, i take it that it would be easier than in a river seeing that they dont feed in freshwater..... if anyone can help on bait, lures, flies and mark it would help loads
Thanks
Dan

Ooh this could be a touchy one dan. As I am not 100% sure on laws etc i think it is probably better to keep my gob shut on this one. I am pretty sure the season has some effect on catching salmon in the sea as well as how close you are to a river mouth. Before starting make sure you have all facts in order incase someone does question what you are doing. That is all the advise i can offer sorry cannot be of more help!

Heard of a guy (former charter skipper) catching one on a leadheaded jellyworm whilst spinning for pollock. Dropped off at the side of the boat. Proper disappointed he was.

Saw one caught a good few years ago by someone spinning for mackerel on a beach near Kinvara. Only one I've ever heard of though. I wouldn't say it's so easy as to say they stop feeding once they get into the river, I'd say that happens long before they get near to shore.

don't think you could pacifically go out and target them in the sea with a rod and line, but i have seen a few being got from piers and one from a beach, the guys that got them were just spinning for mac;s and coalies when they hooked them, but they were all got on the same type of lure, a condor bar.
as ole rab c said " see me' see the sea' i love the sea me"
right i'am off for a swally!!!!!!! so were's the F***'n purse!!!!!!!

I got one last July off the rocks at Port Ballantrae.

Myself & Daniel were fishing with rag and mackeral on the bottom.

There were lots of salmon jumping out in the bay (100s of yards out).

One jumped about 20 yards in front of us so I grabbed Daniel's 6' spinning rod and threw a Toby in the general direction.

After 2 turns of the handle all hell broke loose as the salmon grabbed it.

I got it landed after a very short fight (4 1/2lb).

After the first few seconds the fight was pretty poor, I think this may be due to the fact that it was hooked in both the top and bottom lips and therefore couldn't breathe terribly well?

It was great to see it swim away after taking a wee while to revive it.

Its the same Licence. Season closed at the moment and does not restart until Jan 1st .....

Concentrate on the rivers , they are much easier to catch (than the sea) . If you have the time read the Hugh Falkus Book...
