peeler crab, legs or no legs
noticed over the last couple of years some lads using whole peeler crab with just the back shell removed as bass bait, suppose it makes sense as when the bass come across a natural peeler its probably going to have some shell and legs on it unlike the neat little perfectly peeled baits ive been chucking out..........anyone out there swear by this method or have had success with other species using whole peeler with just the back removed

Species....good film.....I'll get my coat

Re: peeler crab, legs or no legs
I would say no legs Seanie for the simple fact your giving your target species too much to think about ,you dont want him picking away at legs and claws and giving you false bites you want him to go straight for the kill which is your prime juicy peeler bait,But on the flipside if your using a softie or edible crab id say the legs would be fine to leave on? some folk might disagree ,but each to theyre own.

hear what your saying good point, have found whole non-peeling crab in bass before suppose they want to position it correctly for a clean swallow. think the upside could be more takes due to the better sight profile of the bait with legs on.........going to give it a go next time anyways, might work a treatclownfish wrote:I would say no legs Seanie for the simple fact your giving your target species too much to think about ,you dont want him picking away at legs and claws and giving you false bites you want him to go straight for the kill which is your prime juicy peeler bait,But on the flipside if your using a softie or edible crab id say the legs would be fine to leave on? some folk might disagree ,but each to theyre own.

Re: peeler crab, legs or no legs
you know i dont think it matters, because bass catch crabs at all stages of peel.
and acrab leaves the shell backwards and is entire when it leaves
with or without who cares .dont think the bass minds .i have caught loads of codling with hardbacks in there gut i dont think they mind either
sometimes i tip rag baits with the legs of the peelers with great sucess some bass are obviusly leg bass
anayway thats it from me tight lines lads

Experiment
one thing i have found with this fishing lark is there is no rules and it pays to try new things if things are not going your way.

just whip them onto the hook daminim, what i have been doing is freezing all the legs after each session and then when theres enough i peel all the legs and refreeze them into whipped bunches , dont think they are great for bass fishing but work a treat for coalies, whiting and the odd coddaminim wrote:i was using baitbox fozen peelers at the weekend - found it hard to keep the legs attached.

their probably the worst bait since blueys, no their actually worse than blueys. their bags of salty water encased is a leathery shell. i have used them twice before many moons ago and after using the real mackoy i would never ever want to see them again.
the legs can make great tipping baits though they lack any real scent so their not that effective as a main bait unless their is a good concentration of fish in the area. i usually use them for flats for tipping of worm and crab baits to keep the hook point clear, plus in clear water the flow of the tide flutters the legs around making them a more appealing offering.

i could be to avoid catching smaller fish or to keep the crabs away a little longer.

true would also save bait using 1 whole crab rather than 2 or 3 bodys when fishing for larger species
