Rough Ground Multis: Slosh vs 7000 Mag vs Saltist

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Rough Ground Multis: Slosh vs 7000 Mag vs Saltist

#1 Post by TubeNFish »

All those beach caught tope threads have been eating away at me until I finally could take no more! So I decided that over the coming months I'll tool up for next years action.

Having difficulty deciding between the reels though. :?
I thought that casting bulky non-aerodynamic baits the ability to adjust drag on the beach without disassembly and fiddling with brake blocks, might just be a good thing. That's the argument for a mag RG multi. But you lads wot 'ave done it already might be just leaving the blocks in and forgetting all about that in which case I'm getting carried away with the mag.

Is everyone using a Slosh 20/30 for this? When I look across the internet to US & Aussie surfcasters catching big beach fish, the consensus there seems be be an ABU7000 and nothing else.
Right now I've a clean slate so all options can be considered.
So what's being used around Ireland for big bait beachcasting? All your opinions welcome.

for all my rough ground fishing i use the slosh 30, they are a powerhouse of a reel.
i even use it on clean beaches to put out the big baits, in my opinion they are one of the strongest reels around, you want to also look at the 525 mag it is another good solid reel ideal for rough ground.
as ole rab c said " see me' see the sea' i love the sea me"
right i'am off for a swally!!!!!!! so were's the F***'n purse!!!!!!!

Have the slosh 20 and 30, the penn 525 and the abu 7000 mag. If id to pick one for the type of fishing your talking about it would be the slosh 30.

As in one of a report last week saying i have just bought a slosh 30 from southside angling last week. As your from dublin i'd recommend you go and have a look in there and pick it up. they have the 525 also second hand €95 but i got my slosh 30 for €100 brand new so the lads above say it will be reel for you. I have used it the once and found it very easy to cast and only one small over run. i put the larger breaks in and was ready to go. I tried using a non level wind multi before and sent it back to the shop i just couldn't handle it. but i must say the slosh is a fantastic reel. The slosh 20 is smaller than the 30 (both same price €100 in southside brand new) hard to get near that price on line also. if you want to have a go of my reel i will send you a PM with my mobile number and sure have a look (As i'm based in Artane).
Aidan.

The saltier 20 h Or 30 h is miles ahead of the other two, bit more expensive but by far the best of the lot and casts very good distances with big baits

Does the Saltist's spool take a lot of stopping? I never saw one in the hand and wonder about how light/heavy that spool is.
Also: does it have a freespool ratchet? The Daiwa online info is unclear on that.

it does have a ratchet, as dennis say its miles above the other, the 20 is just perfect in size. its casts like a 7ht with the cranking power of an original slosh, but for around 120 euro in veals you cant go wrong

SloSh's are legends. Trinidads and Saltists are awesome pieces of kit for rough work but I agree with gearoid don't forget the range from Penn. Powerful easy casting snd bulletproof build. Any of these mentioned will get the job done. After that is just down to finances and asthetics.

sloshes are the business but i often use a penn 535 gs for conger fishing and it takes some beating especially regards line capacity it holds over 400yrds of .35 mono which is perfect when heavy line is being used...

Old posts should be automatically locked after a while - 3 to 6 months? - to avoid this kind of confusion.

Meantime maybe TubeNfish could give us an update on what he bought and how he got on?

What did I get? I got a huge pay cut thanks to those monkeys in Leinster House handing the national finances to their insolvent banking buddies.

All purchases put on hold for hardship reasons.
But I did decide to try both the Saltist and Slosh 30 with pals this winter with the plan of getting one next year.

Thanks for the feedback lads. It helped in deciding, even if I did have to postpone the purchase.

Commiserations, had a bit of that myself... :(

Anyway, since you're still investigating, see if you can borrow a Penn 535 Mag for a few chucks, that'd be my choice for the rough. Had one for years and love it.
