Juniors Joining

Hi lads

Just wondering whether juniors are allowed to join and how much is it. Am interested to join for the '10 season

We discussed quite a few times in the past, but we decided that because of the nature of the club, with much travelling away to venues in various parts of Ireland, and the overnight stays that it entails, the club did not want the responsibility of looking after juniors. The are quite a few local clubs in your area, the closest probably being Courtown SAA. If you drop into Courtown Angling the lads there would have more details.

Understandable. I am already a member of the CSAA, I recently joined and know Joe and the lads well. My father and I would be interested in these competitions because I understand that a fair few of these events are fairly local to me but was not aware of the overnight part of things. Perhaps you might discuss it once again as my father and I would try and assist ourselves if possible.

Im going to have a chat to one or two clubs first as to how they handle it and bring it before the rest of the committee. Ill revert back in a week or two.

But surely not a problem if the father (trout hunter) is escorting his son (trout hunter jnr) on the trip and providing his accomodation/travel etc during the period of the competition.

Yes this was mentioned before. However, if a junior member turns up alone, even if he should have his parent with him, the committee still have a legal responsibility.

some of the points made previously

it can be done, but it complicates things more especially dealing with the insurance side of things, plus...

a junior will have to be in the company of two adults (if family member not around),

a junior can not be left alone at any time or left a non family member for any length of time.

a junior officer will need to be elected, and said person would have to attend a course 'Code of Ethics and Good Practice For Children's Sport' (not compulsory, but worth it)

there is also the need to ensure the correct age (you wouldn't want someone saying they were a junior and winning comps when they are over the age, it happens)

membership forms would be needed for them and competition release forms to be signed by parent/guardian and for every competition to allow the child to fish (insurance again)

details of any medical background of child should be needed by the club (insurance again) (dont want to be fishing in a remote place with no knowledge of health problems of a child, even if parent is present the club will still need to know in the event of any likely hood of an incident)

a lot of this is just for insurance cover, its OK saying it will never happen or no one will make a claim, that's the time it will happen and if all bases aren't covered it will get messy very fast..

i think i covered most things, as you know the law is very protective of juniors/minors, and its no different in sports and clubs

t might be a runner if all juniors were always accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Even then, what happens if a junior member shows up on their own without a guardian in somewhere like Dunree or Killary. The commitee would be up s*** creek.
