Co.Sligo Rock Mark Wed 14th & Fri 16th October 09

#1 Post by FisherKing »

People:14th Myself, 16th Myself & the girlfriend

Duration:Wed 14 th 3 hrs Fri 16 th 2 hrs

Tide:Filling & Stranding

Weather:Overcast light Easterly winds

Bait:Limpet & Spinner

Rigs:One hook flapper

Results:14th: 2 Pollack 5 Ballan Wrasse, 16th: 8 Pollack,1 Coalfish

Report:Wednesday 14th & Friday 16th

Wednesday 14th

With a few hours to spare, hit a local rock mark for a spot of spinning arrived at 12 not a nibble for 2o min until a miniature Pollack followed by his twin shortly after attacked the spinner that was bigger than them!!, then not as much as a bite for an hour, so time to give the wrasse a go. Moved a few hundred yards down the rock to the Wrasse holes collected a few of the auld reliable limpets, put 3 on the hook, dropped them down to the bottom, & the bites started. Waited for the third bite then struck, a good wee fight and landed a Wrasse of 2.5lb followed by another 4 Wrasse all around the same size lost one lovely red one just as I was about to lift her out about 3.5lb mark  tried for another 2o min or so but no take.

Friday 16th

Went back to the same mark I was at on Wednesday with a light Easterly wind. It was looking good for spinning & from the start was attacked by small Pollack one after the other, best was around 1lb, the water was thick with them, at one stage was getting them by the tails :!:  Moved down the rock a bit & got one lone Coalie followed by a few miniature Pollack-Good wee session even though no big fish.

Im wrasse hungry myself now, Just looking for a few tips on limpets. I've only used one on a hook but you said you used 3.
Could that present too large a bait for the fish?
Whats the ideal limpet size?
Whats the part that gives off the scent? The black inards and or the foot?
When I reel in to recast and theres only the foot left on the hook should I rebait?
Should I cut open the innerds for better scent?
Anyways I thinks thats all my questions!

Cheers salty, you should try up here plenty of big ones. Just after getting my pb Ballan Wrasse today on the the limpet.

Ok I use a size 2 baitholder hook with 3 average size llimpets or 4 small ones enough to cover the hook but make sure the Limpet on the point of the hook can be pushed down easily by the fish, dont worry about the soft bits the main bit is the foot cut a few small slits on the side of the foot & if your looking for big Wrasse check out a few marks at low water & look for places with lots of small musels & marks that hold about 10-15 foot of water at low tide & gullys & just drop the bait straight down into the deepest part, if the Wrasse are there you will get bites in the first 10 min usually on the third bite strike & you should connect. All the wrasse I catch are just under my feet in about 13 feet of water no need to cast hopes this helps.
