Dungarvan newbie needs advice!

#1 Post by itwasthisbig »

Hello everyone!

I've always stuck to fishing rivers and lakes but have decided its time to try a bit of shore angling! Trouble is I haven't a clue where to begin, anything more than fishing for mackerel and I'm "out of my depth" . I'm just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. Will probably start off in Clonea, the Cunnigar and anywhere close to town really and since there seems to be good bass fishing down here I might give them a crack first. If anyone has an advice on rods, tackle, bait ec it would be very much appreciated. Oh and if ye know of any good books for beginners that would be good too, I don't expect to be spoonfed everything!

thanks a mil :)

welcome to the forum

you might want to look at shore report (quest for bass 100 ) happend down your way if you read it you might want to invest in a manual life jacket before you get a selection of expensive lures  tight lines

go in to baumanns indungarvan he should point you in the direction in the line of tackle. i ll pm you a few marks late on . for bait for bass you can t beat fresh lug on a 3/0 pulley rig or a running leger rig.a good book to get would be the fox guide to modern shore fishing by alan ates its a great book and it shows you how to tie the rigs that i said there . good luck and hope you catch a few :D :D :D

I would start with a rod and reel that will do you all round. Maybe a 12 or 13 foot rod and definately a fixed spool reel, I think the Ron Thompson make is a good base to begin not too dear and durable (guys correct me if im wrong). Avoid the temptation of a multiplier reel and its '''distance ability''' keep it simple for the first while unless you are good a undoing kniting. Get a selection of rigs (2 and 3 hook flappers) bought and a selection of weights. If the budget stretches get a tripod as this will save your rod from being scratched to pieces and save you time hunting rock marks for ''''crevice to put your rod''' (no pun intended)...

Tightlines buddy.

PS I knowhow hard it is transitioning from a 10 foot carbon fly rod that weights virtually nothing to a course big 13 foot beach caster and heavy reel. But keep at!!
