Fixed spool suggestions

Lads & lasses,

Looking to add more versatility to my beach based gear, and seeking a bit of advice as to what make/model/size of fixed spool reel would suit me best.

It is likely to be matched to a 15ft K2 titanium and probably loaded with 50lb braid.

Mainly used for long rigs and scratching, but something that could be used for a bit of distance when required aswell would be helpful.

Unlikely to be buying a brand new reel given how expensive f/s's are, so more likely to be trawling fleabay until something comes up.

What would you recommend and why, also as importantly what should I stay away from.

I have a similar set up, i have the k2 with a shimano biomaster xsa 8000, its handy comes with 3 spools, i have the spools as follows one with 12lb mono,one with braid and one with 20lb mono. It is a big reel but i have found it flawless and very versatile from scratching to hauling ray and dogs. I nearly rather it to the multi these days.

Dunner, would that be the same/similar to the sufmaster 750 or 850 only older ?

I have seen a few 750/850 models on fleabay, but couldnt find a 70

cormology, thanks for your input, seem to be afew of them for sale, and not too expensive brand new either

i would defo recommend a shimano ultegra. i use the 10000 on my 16ft k2 titanium and its the mutts nuts

Iv the shimano super ultegra same shape as the one jonny has but its upgraded a bit....best reel iv got to date will handle anything pleasure to cast with

im not one for the oul fixy spools, i have two a

shimano navi xsa 8000- good reel, survived for a year, perhaps looking after it would have helped, was fully submerged three times, i can remember. still kept going, now its on the super sub bench to the

daiwa emcast 6000- this also has recieved several dunkings, the bail arm roller is dodgy, the line lay is alright basically a fairly sturdy average reel. does the job, the ultegra is plain classy, im getting one in a few weeks

their supposed to be, the 750 would have been a surfmaster 60 and the 850 was the 70 but apparently the newer ones are crap.
the 70 was reccommended to me a while back but couldnt find one. i got the last 60 in the shop and after a year its still solid out. i dropped it one day down about 20 foot, bounced off a rock and into a pool and the nut up the middle was bent, somehow the rest was ok. i brought it back to the shop and he laughed at me. he said i was the 1st person EVER to bring one back with a problem so he had no spare parts. he managed to find a nut from another reel that fitted so its back on the rod again. i really cant fault it.

i spotted 2 70's 2nd hand on ebay a few weeks ago. £25 and £35 from the same seller. i went back a few hours later to buy one and they were both gone

I've spotted 2, 1 x 10000, 1 x 12000 on ebay, so nobody go outbidding me

Just one final question that I cant find an answer to anywhere, there seems to be many different models of shimano reels, ie XTA, XSA etc etc are these all basically the same reel, just updated versions? or would they have different features ?

Was looking at these on fleabay myself Dont worry haven't got the cash to buy
If i were you i would go for the 10000 though, the 12000 holds a lot of line and prob a bit big for what you will be using it for

XTA has a bait runner system thats not very good. You dont want that one.

XSB is the newer version of the XSA which has been discontinued

The Ultegra is a quality reel Mark, you won't be disappointed. I've actually got a similar set-up to what you are thinking of, an Ultegra 5500XTB loaded with 50lb Powerpro which I use with 14' 10" Ian Golds Super-Match Xtra and I'm very happy with the set up. I prefer the baitrunner version (xtb I think ) even though it takes a little getting used to its handy to have when you're targeting bigger fish.
